As the job title suggests, this is a multi-faceted role with lots of scope, variety and responsibility.
About the Role
The role is with one of the world's leading providers of specialist services into the Space sector. You'll be joining a team of 20 or so experienced engineers, at a senior level. The initial focus of the role is on a major UK government programme.
Programme Overview
- The programme is not solely space-focused but leverages our client’s expertise, particularly in Earth Observation
- A huge programme with hundreds of stakeholders
- Centred around a cutting-edge technology platform handling enormous volumes of data and transactions
- Has major implications for the protection and improvement of our environment
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Software Engineer/Software Architect will undertake the following in detail:
Management & Leadership
- Management and improvement of underlying infrastructure, including cloud services, security, and automation
- Team leadership and technical management
- Stakeholder management, authoring of technical proposals, and documentation

Technical Development & Architecture
- Hands-on development of new web applications, maintenance of existing ones (across multiple technologies)
- Architecture design for new applications and features
- Deployment of code changes using Azure DevOps, ArgoCD, Buildkite, and GitHub
Cloud & Infrastructure Expertise
- Cloud services (Azure): Enhancing performance, security, and efficiency
- Infrastructure management including:
- Azure cloud operations
- Kubernetes clusters
- Terraform IaC
- Work with geospatial datasets, GeoServer APIs, OGC APIs, and ETL pipelines
Team & Collaboration
- Lead Agile development teams
- Engage with stakeholders across diverse user groups
- Produce technical proposals and clear professional documentation
Requirements
- Extensive cloud/infrastructure/DevOps experience (preferably with Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Linux)
- Strong web application development skills ideally with:
- TypeScript
- Python
- React
- FastAPI
- PostgreSQL
- A technical understanding of spatial data, Earth Observation, environmental data, or GIS
- An investigative mindset with the ability to quickly understand and learn new technologies
- High level of organisation and excellent communication skills

Role Details
Our client’s main office is in Bedfordshire, with flexible working patterns included. The role can largely be done remotely, and visits may only be required upon occasion (about once a month). Local candidates will also have the option to visit the office more frequently if desired.
