Senior Software Engineer

£75,000 to £85,000 + Private Healthcare + Enhanced Pension

Southampton (Hybrid, 4 days per week in the office)

Are you a senior software engineer looking to take end-to-end ownership of complex software at the heart of advanced detection systems, working alongside physicists and engineers to bring new technologies from research into real-world products?

This is a principal-level technical role within a specialist engineering business developing integrated hardware and software platforms used across security, defence and other regulated environments. The software powers the wider ecosystem, enabling connectivity, real-time monitoring, alerting and operational visibility across distributed detection systems. You'll work closely with an in-house team of physicists researching new detection technologies, helping develop the software that brings those capabilities into the finished products.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
