About Commerce
Commerce is an open SaaS ecommerce platform that helps merchants build, run, and grow their businesses.
The Data Team builds systems supporting merchant-facing products, integrations, analytics, reporting, and the infrastructure behind them.
About The Role
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can own complex problems from discovery through production.
This role spans backend systems, frontend integrations, event flows, product experience, production debugging, and cross-team delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build reliable services, APIs, and product-facing workflows.
- Work across backend systems, UI surfaces, event processing, and third-party integrations.
- Translate unclear business/customer problems into concrete technical plans.
- Own production behavior, including monitoring, alerting, logging, debugging, runbooks.
- Collaborate with product, design, infrastructure, support, and engineering teams.
- Improve quality through tests, code reviews, observability, and simpler designs.
- Use data and production evidence to validate decisions.
- Take ownership of incidents and production issues.

What We Are Looking For
Technical Experience
Five+ years in software engineering with:
- Strong experience with Java, Scala, Kotlin, Go, or similar backend languages.
- Full-stack API, services, and integrations experience.
- SQL expertise for data-backed product behavior.
- Clould platform experience (GCP, AWS, or similar).
- Event-driven architecture experience (Kafka, RabbitMQ, Pub/Sub).
- Proficiency in logs, metrics, dashboards, alerts, and tracing.
- Automated testing & code review expertise.
Bonus Exposure
- React / TypeScript (frontend).
- Merchant- or customer-facing product workflows.
- Third-party integrations (e.g., OAuth, external APIs).
- Caching (Redis), rate limiting, queues, and high-volume event processing.
- Analytics, reporting, attribution, or event data products.
Core Mindset
- Problem ownership, not just ticket completion.
- Bias toward addressing root causes vs. implementation details.
- Simple, reliable designs for operational ease.
- Validation through production data/customer impact.
- Clear escalation on ambiguous risks or scope.
- Never shortcut process, security, or production safety.
