Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)
South-East | Hybrid Working
Don't Just Test Software. Engineer Confidence.
A leading data and analytics organisation serving the retail industry is embarking on a significant engineering transformation.
As part of a wider modernisation programme, the business is rebuilding its engineering capability and migrating multiple data products from fragmented legacy SQL and Snowflake implementations onto a modern Databricks and Python-based platform.
To support this journey, we're looking for a highly capable Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) who can help establish a modern quality engineering capability across software, data and cloud products.
This is not a traditional QA role.
We're seeking someone who sees quality as an engineering discipline, remains hands-on with code, and is excited by the opportunity to use AI, automation and modern engineering practices to transform how quality is delivered across development teams.
You won't simply execute automated tests. You'll help build the capability, influence engineering culture, and enable developers to take greater ownership of quality.
The Opportunity
The current testing function is heavily dependent on manual processes and external contractors. As the organisation scales its engineering capability, quality engineering must evolve alongside it.
As a senior individual contributor, you'll assess the existing approach, introduce modern testing practices, design scalable automation frameworks, and embed quality throughout the software development lifecycle.
You'll work closely with software engineers, data engineers and engineering leadership to establish a quality-first culture while introducing AI-assisted approaches that improve productivity, coverage and confidence.
What You'll Be Doing
- Assess the current testing landscape and identify opportunities for improvement
- Design and implement scalable automation frameworks from the ground up
- Embed automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and engineering workflows
- Establish quality engineering standards, patterns, metrics and best practices
- Introduce AI-assisted development and testing techniques
- Support developers in building and maintaining their own automated tests
- Champion a shift-left quality culture across engineering teams
- Test applications, APIs, integrations, data products and cloud-based platforms
- Contribute hands-on using modern programming languages and automation tools
- Mentor engineers and raise quality engineering capability across the business
- Reduce reliance on manual testing and contractor-led delivery models
- Help ensure quality is built into every stage of the development lifecycle

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
