Gina, Chingford

This is a key leadership role within the kitchen. Working closely with the Head Chef, you will help lead the team through preparation and service, maintain standards across every section and support the development of the chefs around you.
You will be confident running the kitchen in the Head Chef’s absence and able to create a calm, organised and professional working environment, even during busy services.

- Train, coach and support Junior Sous Chefs, Chef de Parties and Commis Chefs.
- Help create a positive, respectful and ambitious kitchen culture.
- Support ordering, stock control, deliveries and supplier management.
- Minimise waste and contribute towards food cost and GP targets.
- Assist with rotas, staffing and the efficient management of labour.
- Maintain excellent standards of hygiene, organisation and food safety.
- Support menu development, dish testing and the implementation of new dishes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
