Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist
Haematology and Blood Transfusion Senior BMS
About the Role
An exciting opportunity is available in Haematology & Blood Transfusion within the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership (ESEL). Established as an arms-length organisation within Barts Health NHS Trust, ESEL united the strengths of teams from Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.
As one of the largest pathology providers in the NHS, ESEL combines expertise across all three trusts to deliver high-quality, cost-effective pathology services. It manages an integrated network of 7 hospital laboratories, with The Royal London Hospital (RLH) as its central hub—a key trauma centre hosting the London Air Ambulance. The network also supports clinical specialities across key partner sites, including:
- St. Bartholomew Hospital
- Whipps Cross Hospital
- Newham Hospital
- Homerton Hospital
- Lewisham Hospital
- Queen Elizabeth Hospital
We seek a driven, proactive, and dynamic Biomedical Scientist to join us as a Band 7 Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist, working primarily on overnight shifts. The role focuses on driving service improvement and quality in Haematology and Blood Transfusion at the Royal London Hospital, while collaborating with all partnership sites.

Responsibilities
This role demands a strong team player with:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Delivering high-quality Haematology and Blood Transfusion services
- Ensuring continuous improvement in service delivery
- Collaborating across Pathology Partnership sites
Requirements
Candidates must:
- Hold HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
- Hold or have earned a MSc in Biomedical Science or IBMS Special Examination (Fellowship)
This is an opportunity to contribute to an innovative, forward-thinking organisation, supporting one of the largest networked laboratories in the NHS.
Transformation Programme
Between 2021 and 2024, the Partnership underwent a major transformation to:
- Establish a single network of laboratories
- Implement a unified Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
- Introduce a single Quality Management System (QMS)

- A main hub at the Royal London Hospital
- Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) at partner sites
- Three operational divisions:
- Blood Sciences (Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Biochemistry)
- Microbiology and Virology
- Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics
Financial and workforce metrics (2024/25):
- Operating costs: ~£121m per annum
- Workforce: ~860 WTEs
