Senior Specifications Technologist

Group Retailer Specification Technologist

Location: Market Harborough

Sector: Food Manufacturing / Ingredients

Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Salary: Up to £40,000

Working Arrangement: Hybrid - 4 days office-based / 1 day remote working

A leading food manufacturing business is seeking an experienced Group Retailer Specification Technologist to join its Technical & Quality team. This is an exciting opportunity for a specification professional with strong experience working with major UK retailers, product specifications, food labelling, and regulatory compliance within a fast-paced food manufacturing environment.

About the Role

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and maintenance of:

  • Finished product specifications
  • Labels across a diverse portfolio
  • Adherence to food safety, legal, quality, and authenticity requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate information from multiple manufacturing sites and supply partners to:
    • Create new product specifications and product labels
  • Develop and maintain accurate product specifications using a right-first-time approach, ensuring compliance with:
    • Customer standards
    • Legal requirements
    • Internal policies
  • Support new product development by:
    • Creating sample specifications
    • Participating in artwork and labelling approval processes
  • Manage specification amendments via established change control procedures, ensuring:
    • Appropriate stakeholder approval
    • Effective communication of changes

  • Respond to customer enquiries by:
    • Gathering technical and product information from internal teams
    • Providing professional, informative documentation
  • Support certification activities for products requiring:
    • Halal, Kosher or Organic accreditations
  • Monitor changes to:
    • Customer requirements
    • UK/EU legislation
    • Assess potential impacts on products and processes
  • Continuously review and improve:
    • Specification systems
    • Processes for compliance, efficiency, and effectiveness
  • Maintain:
    • Specification records
    • Development systems and documentation
  • Support the wider specification team with:
    • Creation and maintenance of specifications and labels

Person Specification (Requirements)

  • Degree-level qualification in Food Science or a related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in:
    • Food product specification creation and maintenance
  • Proven experience working directly with:
    • Major UK retailers
    • Retailer specification portals
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Food safety
    • HACCP principles
    • Quality systems
  • Knowledge of:
    • UK and/or EU food labelling legislation
  • Good understanding of:
    • Food manufacturing processes
    • Raw materials
    • Allergens
    • Finished products
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a logical approach
  • Ability to:
    • Influence stakeholders
    • Drive actions to completion
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills
  • Exceptional organisational expertise with the ability to:
    • Prioritise workload in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail and strong numerical skills
  • Proactive, solution-focused mindset with:
    • Positive attitude
    • Willingness to embrace new challenges
