Senior SSAS Specialist – Interim

Overview

Role: Senior SSAS Specialist (Interim) Rate: Competitive (subject to experience & interview competencies) Type: Contractor (via umbrella payroll company – Inside IR35) Location: Bristol, BS1 Hours: 35 hours per week (full-time, Monday to Friday)

Hartley Pensions seeks an experienced pension specialist with extensive trustee administration and HMRC compliance expertise to support their SSAS department during a critical transitional phase.

This opportunity is ideal for:

  • A Senior SIPP Specialist
  • A Corporate Pension Administrator
  • A Trust Tax/Governance professional

with experience in complex trustee structures and pension tax reporting. A structured pathway into the high-value SSAS market awaits.


Who Are Hartley Pensions?

Hartley Pensions is a SIPP & SSAS pensions operator based in Bristol. Since July 2022, it has been in trading administration, Guided by UHY Hacker Young, the company remains operational while preparing for a client transition to new UK-based providers and eventual wind-down.


Role Summary

As the Interim Senior SSAS Specialist, you will serve as the primary point of contact for member-trustees and provide technical oversight in ensuring seamless SSAS scheme administration during this transitional phase.


Key Responsibilities

  • Client & Stakeholder Liaison
    • Acting as the critical liaison for member-trustees, offering guidance on:
      • Scheme structural changes
      • Member retirements
      • Death benefits
      • SSAS loan-backs
      • Transfers out
    • Managing all incoming/outgoing communications with clients, solicitors, accountants, and intermediaries (phone/email/correspondence).

  • Administrative & Compliance Support

    • Maintaining an up-to-date log of all post and client interactions.
    • Providing technical administration support to the SSAS & SIPP teams, including assisting on SIPP-related tasks.
    • Ensuring timely submission of:
      • Annual HMRC return of annual information for both SSAS & SIPP schemes.
      • Event reports and PSRs where applicable.
      • SA970 Tax Claim forms for schemes that have paid tax on investments.
      • AFT (Accounting for Tax) forms.
    • Managing FCA RegData Returns for SIPP schemes, including Complaints, Product Sales Reports, etc.
    • Overseeing GPi (General Pension Industry) deadlines for SIPP reporting.
  • Financial, Legality & Governance Compliance

    • Ensuring all SSAS schemes are registered with the Information Commissioners and renovating annual registrations as needed.
    • Verifying compliance in all client money payments, adhering strictly to Client Money Policy.
    • Providing high-level investment oversight for commercial property purchases, land acquisitions, and connected-party transactions.
    • Ensuring all financial transactions meet regulatory and internal business compliance requirements.
  • Duties as Agreed

    • Adherence to all grey/black listed duties, fulfilling reasonable requests from the business or board.

Ideal Candidate

  • Essential Qualifications & Experience
    • 2+ years minimum experience in SSAS administration (preferably 2-3+ years in a senior-focused setting).
    • If transitioning from less specific roles (e.g., SIPP administration, trust tax, or governance), CV must demonstrate:
      • Experience at board/trustee level, managing client relationships and corporate governance.
      • A strong track-record in navigating complex tax frameworks, particularly pension-specific PSRs or equivalent high-end trust tax reporting.
    • Comprehensive end-to-end SSAS expertise, covering:
      • New business administration
      • Scheme restructuring
      • Transfers out/in of accounts
