Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, innovative paediatric nurse to become a band 6 Staff Nurse in the dedicated paediatric unit in the Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre (RDCEC) adjacent to the main branch of Moorfields Eye Hospital in City Road.

Experience working in this specialty as a band 6 nurse registered paediatric/child branch nurse and a post registration ophthalmic qualification is essential. The successful candidate will be experienced in paediatric phlebotomy, especially for the under 2 year olds, and will supervise the training of RDCEC staff in this skill.

The post holder will work closely with the members of the paediatric multi professional team to provide children, young people and their families with a compassionate, quality service in the RDCEC consistent with the principles of the Moorfields Way.

The post holder will develop a close working relationship with the Safeguarding Children & Young People team and will play a significant role in the Safeguarding Children agenda within the trust.

The successful candidate will be flexible, adaptable and an excellent role model for the multi-professional team and will contribute to the outstanding achievements of the paediatric service in Moorfields.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as a senior nurse in the team assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care programmes throughout the paediatric nursing service in the Children’s Eye Centre (RDCEC).
  • The post holder will participate in safeguarding children and young people, using prior experience and knowledge and will communicate concerns to the safeguarding team and paediatric colleagues.
  • The post holder will work collaboratively with the permanent nursing and play teams to ensure that families are involved in their child’s care and will use their knowledge of child development to help families through the paediatric hospital journey so that the best outcomes can be achieved for children using our services.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • Assess the needs of the infant, child and young person according to the agreed model of nursing care, implement and evaluate the planned care, working in partnership with the family and ensuring that a safe standard of care is delivered.
  • To work towards the development and delivery of high standards of patient care by using clearly defined care pathways.
  • Participate in safeguarding children and young people within the Trust and ensure that the Trust Safeguarding Policy is adhered to and that concerns are communicated to the senior members of the paediatric team and the safeguarding children team.
  • Undertake the required levels of training for Safeguarding Children and Young People.
  • Participate in the pre-admission assessment of children and their families.
  • Ensure that all forms of communication are used effectively in the interest of family centred care.
  • Liaise closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team in order to implement distraction therapies for working with children and their families in any clinical setting.
  • Handle parents/guardians enquiries politely, referring unanswered queries and reporting details to Paediatric Sister.
  • Contribute positively to the process of change within the ward or clinics when this is aimed at the improvement of family centred care or the delivery of service.
  • Participate in ward or departmental quality assurance activities, working alongside the permanent staff to monitor standards of care.

Education And Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered Paediatric/Child Branch Nurse of working towards
  • Ophthalmic qualification
  • Current NMC registration

Desirable criteria

  • PILS compliance or be willing to undertake this training

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Minimum 4 years post qualifying paediatric nursing experience
  • Paediatric ophthalmic nursing experience
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and that of others
