Senior Staff Software Engineer, Maia Team - Matillion

About The Role
As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on our Maia team, you'll be at the heart of everything we do: working on agentic AI systems, building new tools and integrations, and staying finger-on-the-pulse with the latest developments in Gen AI. This isn't BAU engineering—this is high-visibility, high-impact work where your decisions shape the product.
You'll drive architecture, mentor engineers, and feed into strategy. Things move quickly here—requirements evolve, new opportunities emerge, and we need someone who thrives in that environment. If you're an expert Java engineer and already experimenting with Claude, Gemini, and agentic workflows—and you want to do that at scale in a world-class engineering team—this is the role for you.
This role is hybrid to our Manchester office. We value collaboration and believe the best work happens when we’re together—so we ask for a minimum of 2 days per week in the office. It's about building relationships and culture that make great engineering possible.

What You Will Be Doing
- Lead technical architecture and design for the Maia team—working across two squads to:
- Define direction and validate proposals
- Ensure scalable, maintainable software built at pace
- Drive agentic AI feature development, building:
- New tools and integrations
- Workflow systems that push the boundaries of our Data Productivity Cloud
- Stay ahead of the curve on Generative AI (Gen AI) developments by:
- Trialling new models, tools, and approaches
- Sharing insights with team strategy and championing new ways of working
- Act as technical mentor and coach to engineers, raising the bar through:
- Code reviews
- Design input
- Hands-on guidance
- Collaborate closely with our Product Manager and Data Science team to translate product vision into technical reality, balancing:
- Innovation and code quality
- Innovation with delivery pace
What We Are Looking For
- Deep Java expertise combined with hands-on experience:
- Building scalable distributed systems on AWS
- Writing great code and thinking seriously about architecture
- Proven experience working with agentic AI systems—including:
- Understanding how they differ from traditional systems
- Leading (or building) features in this space
- Forming an informed point of view on testing and scaling these systems
- Technical leadership experience, with:
- Prior roles as tech lead
- Influence over architecture decisions
- Guidance to others (evolving engineering capability)
- Full-stack capability strongly preferred (especially in React, TypeScript, and Tailwind)
- Familiarity with frameworks like LangChain or Langgraph is a plus
- Adaptable and fast-moving personality:
- Thriving where requirements evolve rapidly
- Comfortable with ambiguity
- Bias for action when adopting and championing new technologies
