About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Structural Engineer to join our team. This role is responsible for the structural design, analysis, and detailing of High Voltage substations ranging from 400 kV, 132 kV, to 33 kV. The ideal candidate will focus primarily on the design of steel structures, including equipment support structures, gantries, towers, and other key substation components, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, safety regulations, and project requirements. The engineer will also collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver efficient, safe, and optimized structural solutions for complex substation projects.

Qualifications and Experience
Education: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or a related discipline) is required.
Professional Registration: Attaining Chartered Engineer status (CEng) with a recognized institution such as the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) or the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) would be advantageous but is not mandatory.
Experience: A minimum of 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in structural design is typical, with significant proven experience specifically within the high-voltage transmission and distribution utility sector.
Technical Skills and Knowledge
Structural Design & Analysis: Expertise in the design and analysis of various substation structures, including steel gantries, equipment foundations (transformers, circuit breakers, surge arresters), control buildings, and underground utilities (cable tunnels/trenches).
Design Software Proficiency: Advanced skills using structural analysis and design software are essential, such as: RFEM, Idea Statica, STAAD Pro, ETABS, SAP2000, RISA, or ANSYS

Drafting and layout tools like REVIT, TEKLA, AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Civil 3D
Familiarity with BIM and 3D modeling tools is often preferred Codes and Standards: Comprehensive knowledge and ability to apply relevant international and regional design codes and utility standards, including: Eurocodes, British Standards, or IEC standards (UK/International standards)
Familiarity with client-specific utility standards (e.g., National Grid, SSE) Site and Environmental Knowledge: Understanding of geotechnical constraints, site grading, and designing structures to withstand specific environmental loads (wind, seismic, extreme weather).
Management and Leadership Responsibilities
Project Leadership: Ability to lead projects from feasibility studies through detailed design, construction, and commissioning, managing timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.
Team Management: Provide leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to a team of structural engineers, designers, and technical staff.
Quality Assurance (QA/QC): Owning or overseeing the QA/QC strategy for the department, conducting design reviews, peer checks, and ensuring all project deliverables meet quality benchmarks and regulatory compliance.
Stakeholder Coordination: Liaising with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
Key Competencies
Strong analytical and complex problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical reports, presentations, and team coordination.
Risk-aware mindset with an ability to anticipate potential concerns and implement mitigation strategies. The North Europe Grid System Integration (GSI) team delivers a wide range of turnkey high voltage AC and DC transmission projects to its Customers in the UK, Ireland, and Scandinavia.
