White & Lloyd | Thames Ditton, Surrey | Full-time | Office-based | £DOE + bonus

About White & Lloyd

White & Lloyd is a multidisciplinary construction consultancy providing Structural Engineering, Quantity Surveying and Building Surveying services across London and the South East. We work on technically interesting projects from high-end residential homes and listed buildings to commercial refurbishments, schools and community buildings, with our engineers involved from feasibility through design, procurement and construction.

Unlike most structural practices, our engineers sit alongside in-house Quantity Surveyors and Building Surveyors, so they see and influence the commercial side of every project, not just the calculations.

The Role

We are investing in our Structural Engineering team and want a Chartered Structural Engineer to lead it.

This is a leadership appointment, not just a senior technical seat.

You'll inherit a small, established team of engineers and technicians, including dedicated drafting support, and take ownership of how the discipline runs: technical standards, client relationships, workload, and direction. A core part of your mandate, with the firm's full backing, is to shift our project mix toward larger and more rewarding commissions. You'll stay hands-on technically while you do it.

If you're currently a strong senior engineer at a larger consultancy waiting your turn to lead, this is the role that skips the queue.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What You'll Be Doing

Leadership

  • Run the day-to-day operation of the Structural Engineering team
  • Allocate workload and keep projects properly resourced
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers
  • Set the standard for how the team communicates with clients

Technical

  • Act as senior technical authority across our engineering projects
  • Review and approve designs, calculations and reports before issue
  • Guide work across residential, commercial, heritage and refurbishment projects
  • Keep designs practical, buildable and compliant

Clients and Commercial

  • Be the principal point of contact on live engineering commissions
  • Make sure client queries are answered promptly, tracked, and charged where appropriate
  • Build relationships with clients, architects and contractors
  • Scope and price new commissions, monitor delivery and profitability
  • Work with our QS and Building Surveying teams on multidisciplinary jobs
  • Help win the bigger work the team will grow on

Our Projects

Prime residential developments, major refurbishments and structural alterations, basement extensions, listed buildings and heritage structures, commercial fit-outs, schools and community buildings, structural inspections and defect investigations, temporary works advice. Project values range from £100,000 to £15 million, and growing the upper end of that range is part of this job.

What We're Looking For

  • Chartered Structural Engineer (MIStructE or MICE). We'll consider recently chartered engineers with the right drive as readily as long-established ones
  • Solid structural design experience across residential, refurbishment and commercial work
  • Experience leading or mentoring engineers, or clear readiness to step up
  • Strong client-facing communication and commercial awareness; this matters as much as the engineering
  • Comfortable taking ownership and making decisions without waiting to be told
  • Within a reasonable commute of Thames Ditton and happy to be in the office most of the week. This is a leadership role and the team needs a present leader

  • Varied, technically interesting projects with an established QS and Building Surveying practice behind you
  • Company pension, professional subscriptions paid, ongoing CPD

If you're a Chartered Structural Engineer who wants to lead a team properly rather than wait for the chance, we'd like to hear from you.
