Job Title: Senior Systems Engineer

Location: United Kingdom (Remote initially, UK-based role)
Contract: 6-12 months

Job Purpose

The Senior Systems Engineer is accountable for the design, implementation, operation, support, and continuous improvement of enterprise infrastructure, cloud platforms, and hosting services. This role provides technical leadership across hybrid environments, ensuring systems are resilient, secure, scalable, and aligned with organisational objectives.

The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for managing and supporting Microsoft Azure cloud services, on-premises infrastructure, virtualisation platforms, storage, networking technologies, and container orchestration platforms including Kubernetes and OpenShift. Working closely with security teams, architects, application teams, and service delivery functions, the role supports business-critical services while driving automation, modernisation, and operational excellence initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and support enterprise infrastructure across Azure and on-premises environments
  • Manage Microsoft Azure cloud services and hybrid infrastructure
  • Administer Windows Server and Linux platforms
  • Deploy and support Kubernetes and Red Hat OpenShift environments
  • Develop Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, ARM Templates, Ansible)
  • Drive automation using PowerShell, Bash, Python, or similar scripting tools
  • Ensure platform security, resilience, monitoring, backup, and disaster recovery
  • Collaborate with architects, security teams, and application teams on cloud transformation initiatives
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement and platform modernisation

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of Systems, Infrastructure, Cloud, or Platform Engineering experience
  • Strong Microsoft Azure administration and cloud infrastructure expertise
  • Hybrid Cloud & On-Premises Infrastructure experience
  • Windows Server & Linux administration
  • VMware or Hyper-V virtualisation
  • Networking (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, Firewalls, Routing, Load Balancing)
  • Kubernetes administration experience
  • Red Hat OpenShift experience
  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, ARM, Ansible)
  • Monitoring & Observability tools
  • PowerShell, Bash, or Python scripting
  • Disaster Recovery & Backup solutions
  • Agile, DevOps, or Platform Engineering experience

  • Azure Administrator or Azure Solutions Architect Certification
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
  • Red Hat OpenShift Certification
  • VMware VCP
  • Experience in Defence, Aerospace, or other highly regulated environments
  • Knowledge of Azure Arc, Zero Trust Architecture, SDN, Istio, and FinOps
