About the Role
A well funded and rapidly expanding Oxford start-up is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to take full ownership of their next-generation products — from first concept to field-ready reality. This is a technical leadership role at the heart of everything we build: architecture, integration, verification, and productization of complex opto-electro-mechanical systems.
You'll sit at the intersection of precision mechanics, automation, software, and reliability engineering — turning ambitious R&D into robust, high-performance products our customers can rely on. Working across early-stage research, customer engagements, and product development, you'll help shape the technical roadmap and mature prototypes into deliverable systems.
Responsibilities
The Senior Systems Engineer will own:
- End-to-end systems ownership
- Lead system architecture from concept through requirements, design, prototyping, verification, and release
- Build system-level specifications, performance budgets, and risk models spanning optical, mechanical, electrical, and software domains
- Define and drive processes for integration, validation, and troubleshooting

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
