About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Systems Engineer to join our Ecommerce Support Team at Next Ltd, based out of our Head Office in Leicestershire. This pivotal role is designed for a technical leader passionate about maintaining and enhancing the reliability, performance, and scalability of our digital infrastructure. As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will be at the forefront of our efforts to transition from reactive incident management to a proactive, automation-driven engineering practice. Your expertise will be instrumental in safeguarding our extensive e-commerce estate, which includes over 140 websites and various customer-facing applications, ensuring a seamless shopping experience for millions of users.
In this capacity, you will collaborate closely with Product Development, Cloud Engineering, and Central Infrastructure teams. Your insights and automation initiatives will influence architectural decisions, reduce operational toil, and promote best practices in observability and reliability. The role offers an exciting opportunity to lead strategic initiatives, drive continuous improvement, and shape the future of Next's digital platform with a focus on resilience and customer satisfaction.

- Expert-level proficiency with observability and monitoring tools such as Dynatrace, Grafana, or similar platforms.
- Strong programming skills in Python, PowerShell, or equivalent scripting languages for automation and tooling development.
- Proven experience supporting high-traffic, enterprise-level web applications with a solid understanding of DNS, SSL, CDN caching strategies, and performance optimization techniques.
- High-level SQL expertise for data analysis and performance troubleshooting.
- Comprehensive knowledge of cloud services, microservices architecture, and containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with Incident and Problem Management frameworks, particularly within enterprise tools like ServiceNow.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and stakeholders at all levels.
- A growth-oriented mindset, organizational skills, and a proactive approach to workload management, especially during peak retail periods.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Senior Systems Engineer encompass a broad spectrum of technical and leadership duties aimed at maintaining and enhancing our digital infrastructure:
- Drive observability and reliability initiatives by defining and monitoring Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Error Budgets for critical customer journeys such as Checkout and Search. Utilize tools like Dynatrace and Grafana to create high-fidelity dashboards and real-time health alerts.
- Optimize platform performance by identifying and resolving latency issues across microservice architectures, leveraging distributed tracing, and conducting application profiling to maximize throughput.
- Develop automation scripts in Python or PowerShell to eliminate manual tasks, build self-healing workflows, and implement programmatic remediations that reduce operational toil.
- Lead technical incident response efforts by orchestrating diagnostics across teams, managing incident resolution processes, and conducting blameless post-incident reviews to implement long-term solutions.
- Collaborate with development teams during early feature design phases to embed robust telemetry, review proposed production changes, and work with InfoSec to mitigate security threats.
- Apply performance testing methodologies, including load, stress, and endurance testing, to ensure system resilience and adherence to performance benchmarks for all releases.
- Mentor and upskill team members by sharing knowledge, supporting automation initiatives, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
