About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Systems Engineer to join our Ecommerce Support Team at Next Ltd, based at our Head Office in Leicestershire. This pivotal role is designed for an experienced professional who is passionate about ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of our digital retail platforms. As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will be at the forefront of our technical operations, leading efforts to shift from reactive incident management to a proactive, automation-driven approach that emphasizes observability and system resilience. Your expertise will be instrumental in safeguarding our extensive e-commerce estate, which includes over 140 websites and diverse customer applications, ensuring a seamless shopping experience for millions of customers worldwide. You will collaborate closely with Product Development, Cloud Engineering, and Infrastructure teams, leveraging data-driven insights and automation to optimize our platforms, eliminate operational toil, and drive strategic improvements. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence technical strategy, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of Next’s digital infrastructure.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of advanced technical skills, hands-on experience, and a proactive mindset. Essential qualifications include:

  • Expert-level proficiency with observability and monitoring tools such as Dynatrace, Grafana, or equivalent platforms.
  • Strong programming capabilities in Python, PowerShell, or similar languages, with experience developing automation scripts and internal tools.
  • Proven experience supporting high-traffic web applications, with a solid understanding of DNS, SSL, CDN caching strategies, and web performance optimization.
  • High-level SQL expertise for data investigation and performance tuning.
  • Familiarity with cloud services, microservices architecture, and containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Incident and Problem Management frameworks, particularly within enterprise environments using tools such as ServiceNow.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and stakeholders effectively.
  • A growth-oriented mindset with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage workload during peak retail periods.

Responsibilities

The Senior Systems Engineer will be responsible for a broad range of technical and strategic activities, including:

  • Driving observability and reliability initiatives by defining and monitoring Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Error Budgets for critical customer journeys such as Checkout and Search, utilizing tools like Dynatrace and Grafana to develop dashboards and real-time health alerts.
  • Optimizing platform performance by identifying and resolving latency issues within microservice architectures through distributed tracing and application profiling.
  • Developing automation scripts in Python or PowerShell to eliminate manual tasks, improve efficiency, and create self-healing workflows that trigger automated remediation processes.
  • Leading technical incident response efforts, orchestrating cross-team diagnostics, and conducting blameless Post-Incident Reviews to implement long-term solutions.
  • Collaborating with development and security teams to review production change proposals, embed telemetry during feature design, and mitigate security threats at the edge layer.
  • Applying performance testing methodologies, including load, stress, and endurance testing, to ensure system resilience and meet defined performance benchmarks.
  • Mentoring support engineers and analysts, sharing expertise, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and automation within the team.
