Senior Systems Engineer

Location: Templecombe, United Kingdom

About the Role

This Senior Systems Engineer role ensures systems are designed, developed, and tested to rigorous company and international standards while mentoring other engineers.

You’ll oversee the systems engineering lifecycle—transforming requirements into designs, defining performance, and ensuring flawless operation—while driving mentorship and technical leadership within the team.

Principal Relationships

Your work spans multiple stakeholders, collaborating closely with:

  • Designers (all levels)
  • Bid, project, and testing teams
  • Installation and supply chain teams
  • Project planners, sales/marketing, and commercial functions

Key Responsibilities

Design and Development

  • Converts requirements into conceptual designs via operational analysis, simulations, and trade-off studies.
  • Defines technical feasibility and design feasibility through analysis and propositions.

Quality & Standards

  • Ensures compliance with engineering and safety standards (e.g., ESM).
  • Manages quality metrics to assess systems engineering processes.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains system engineering tools (e.g., DOORS, System Architect).

Testing & Verification

  • Supports test strategies, planning, and specification development.
  • Conducts acceptance testing with clients, authorising results and defects.
  • Generates test plans, interfaces, and reports.

Requirements Management

  • Decomposes customer requirements into system/subsystem specifications.
  • Drafts operational plans and validate design limits via simulations.

Leadership & Decision-Making

  • Mentors Systems Engineers by assigning tasks, guiding progress, and setting priorities.
  • Proposes cost-optimised, compliant work package estimates.

Continuous Improvement

  • Updates processes and standards based on industry best practices.
  • Tracks advancements in specialist domains (e.g., sonar systems).

Collaboration & Adaptation

  • Works with security clearance processes.
  • Ensures adherence to Thales’ Code of Practice and ethical conduct.

Skills & Competencies

  • Tool proficiency: MS Office, Visio, DOORS, System Architect, JIRA, CHORUS².
  • Advanced understanding of configuration control and engineering safety management.
  • Technical leadership to resolve conflicts and meet system demands.

  • Proven system engineering expertise, problem-solving, and resourcefulness.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills—clear communication across technical levels.
  • Demonstrated team collaboration and commitment to Safety and Ethics.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure while delivering high integrity work.

Education & Certification

Essential:

  • Professional engineering status or equivalent (e.g., IEng, CEng).
  • Must be a British citizen by birth.
  • Security Clearance (SC)—proof of entitlement for pre-employment.

Desirable:

  • HNC/HND or degree in Engineering or related field.

Security Clearance Requirement

Security restrictions apply to this role. As a sole British citizen by birth, you must achieve unconditional SC clearance.Currently holding SC will accelerate processing.
