Senior Technical Designer – Core Gameplay Pillar
We are a crowdfunded company dedicated to building the "Best Damn Space Sim Ever". Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), the creators of Star Citizen and Squadron 42, are looking for an enthusiastic and technically minded Senior Technical Designer to join our UK studio in the heart of Manchester.
About the Role
This Senior Technical Designer position is based in our Core Gameplay Pillar. Our team designs and develops actor-centric gameplay systems used across Squadron 42 and Star Citizen's Persistent Universe.
We are at the core of actor-based gameplay, shaping engaging core gameplay loops that set the standard for our products. In this role, you’ll:
- Design and implement innovative gameplay systems
- Develop engineering solutions to complex technical challenges
- Collaborate with designers, artists, and programmers to deliver high-quality, immersive experiences
Key Responsibilities
- Support and mentor systems designers, level designers, and design leadership in shaping gameplay vision, interfaces, and in-game moments
- Own the implementation, optimization, and maintenance of level scripting
- Build prototypes and test levels that showcase, validate, and document game features, systems, and bespoke experiences
- Bridge the gap between designers, artists, and engineers to create high-level experiences that push engine capabilities
- Work closely with UI, Art, and programming teams to design and deliver front-, in-game, and user interface features using modern UI/UX best practices

What We’re Looking For
- Experience in Technical/Systems/Gameplay design (proven roles in level scripting, procedural systems, or actor-based mechanics)
- Programming background using object-oriented languages (e.g., C#, C++, Python).
- Bonus points for creating custom tools or visual scripting systems (e.g., Blueprints, Unity Scriptable Objects)
- Practical expertise in scalable gameplay logic, particularly with Unreal Blueprints, Unity Tools, or similar
- A passion for problem-solving and collaborating across disciplines
- A proactive, motivational mindset—able to mentor teams, share knowledge, and uplift multidisciplinary players
