About the Role

The Senior Technical Services Manager (STSM) provides strategic technical leadership across multiple projects, overseeing the quality, consistency, and delivery of all building services activities throughout the project lifecycle.

Acting as a senior technical authority within the business, the STSM supports Technical Services Managers (TSMs), project teams, and senior leadership by:

  • Driving technical excellence
  • Managing risk assessment and mitigation
  • Developing engineering innovation strategies
  • Leading commissioning and handover methodologies
  • Reinforcing client confidence and trust

The role focuses on:

  • Managing complex projects and high-risk technical challenges
  • Conducting technical assurance reviews
  • Mentoring Technical Services Managers (TSMs)
  • Supporting major bid opportunities
  • Ensuring best practice is consistently applied across the portfolio

The STSM serves as the escalation point for technical issues and plays a key role in:

  • Developing technical standards
  • Implementing lessons learned processes
  • Leading continuous improvement initiatives

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and strategic direction to Technical Services Managers
  • Act as a senior technical mentor for assigned team members
  • Maintain and refine company technical standards and best practice guidance
  • Drive technical excellence, innovation, and risk management across project portfolios
  • Lead technical assurance reviews and sign-off processes

Requirements

Essential

  • Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in Building Services, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Previous experience in a managerial and mentoring role
  • Minimum 12–15 years’ experience within construction and building services, with expertise in traditional and design-and-build procurement
  • Proven experience in Managing MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Public Health) services through the full project lifecycle
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Mechanical systems
    • Electrical systems
    • Public health and sanitary engineering
    • Building controls & fire alarm systems
    • ICT, security, and AV integration
  • Experience managing consultants, subcontractors, and client stakeholders
  • Excellent:
    • Technical, organisational, communication, problem-solving skills
    • Client-facing and stakeholder management ability
    • Commercial awareness with risk assessment capability

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), or progression towards professional accreditation
  • Membership of a recognised professional body such as CIBSE, IET, IMechE, or CIOB
  • NEBOSH qualification
  • Experience delivering high-value commercial fit-outs, refurbishments, and mission-critical projects
  • Experience in:
    • Developing technical standards and governance frameworks
    • Creating lessons-learned programmes
    • Implementing digital engineering and BIM methodologies
    • Advanced commissioning protocols
