Position Overview:
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Senior Technician to lead and perform high-quality testing of construction materials such as aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and soils. The role involves supervising junior technicians, conducting advanced laboratory and site-based testing, ensuring accurate data reporting, and maintaining compliance with relevant standards and specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform and oversee laboratory and on-site testing of materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, bituminous materials, and cementitious products
- Ensure testing is carried out in line with industry standards and project specifications
- Supervise and support junior technicians, providing guidance, training, and quality checks on their work
- Prepare, review, and approve accurate test reports and data for internal and client use
- Maintain calibration, cleanliness, and safe operation of laboratory equipment
- Work closely with site teams and operations managers to provide timely and relevant test results
- Contribute to quality control and quality assurance procedures on materials and processes
- Participate in internal and external audits (e.g. UKAS) and help maintain accreditation standards
- Troubleshoot issues with tests, materials, or equipment and recommend corrective actions
- Assist in the development and implementation of new testing methods and procedures
- Ensure all work complies with health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential
- Relevant qualification in Construction Materials Testing or a related field (e.g. HNC/HND, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent experience
- Strong experience in a materials testing role, ideally with supervisory or senior-level responsibilities
- Sound knowledge of testing standards and methods (BS, EN, ASTM, ISO)
- Experience working in a UKAS-accredited laboratory (or similar accreditation) is highly desirable
- Proficient in using testing equipment and tools for laboratory and field tests
- Valid UK driving licence essential for site-based work
- Strong technical and analytical skills
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- High level of organisation and time management
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong understanding of health & safety procedures in lab and site environments

Desirable
- Previous experience in quarrying, construction, mining, or similar heavy industry
- MPQC or NVQ Level 2 in Extractives Operations
- First Aid or health & safety training (e.g. IOSH Working Safely)
