Role: Senior Technician – Interior Architecture & Design

Directorate:

School of Textiles and Design (Galashiels)

Grade:

Grade 6 - £31,236 - £36,636 per annum pro rata

Contract Type:

Part Time (14 hours per week/0.4FTE) Fixed Term for 10 months

Detailed Description

This role will provide specialist technical support to Interior Architecture and Design. This will involve supporting student groups, running specialist skills workshops and supporting delivery of studio courses.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Working largely autonomously with academic and technical colleagues and students, the role holder will;

  • Support in the delivery of Interior Architecture and Design classes, studio sessions and tutorials, through providing technical demonstrations and input.
  • Establish strong working relationships to understand user need and to support in ensuring that the requirements of teaching programmes and research activities are understood, assessed, and prioritised.
  • Support in the planning and management of a multi-user environment, including the use of specialist resources and equipment.
  • Plan, set up and prepare work areas in accordance with course leader requirements.
  • Performing a range of duties required to support the overall functioning of the team and to assist in the operation of a clean and safe working environment, e.g. preparation for classes and activities, waste disposal, manual handling of heavy or fragile equipment.
  • Monitor changes, trends and developments in area of expertise and engage in training/refresher training to maintain the required knowledge and skills base.
  • Understanding and monitoring of health and safety practices for the work area environment. Ensuring safe working practices and procedures are implemented for apparatus/equipment/machinery/safety and storage of substances/hazardous substances, and that there is appropriate use of required PPE for self and others.
  • Writing or contributing to risk assessments and Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs) according to standards set by legislation and professional bodies, as well as providing general health and safety information.
  • Occasionally deputise for other colleagues to cover emergencies, sickness or annual leave.
  • Mentoring, training and instructing less experienced colleagues.
  • In collaboration with academics/line manager obtain quotations for equipment or services, pricing, and on-site demonstrations, procuring in accordance with relevant procedures once approved by budget holder. Monitoring and maintaining appropriate stock levels. Maintain records of expenditure.

Education, Qualifications and Experience

Essential Criteria

  1. Educated to SCQF Level 7-8 (HNC/HND) OR an Apprenticeship in a relevant subject PLUS relevant work experience
  2. Demonstrable knowledge and skills in Interior Architecture and Design
  3. IT literacy and ability to use relevant specialist software packages for Interior Architecture and Design
  4. Ability to plan and organise assigned projects/programmes of work, managing expectations with students, academic staff, and team colleagues.
  5. Demonstrable ability to work quickly, flexibly and accurately in a dynamic, changing and pressured environment.
  6. Demonstrable understanding and experience of relevant health and safety protocols/requirements and of ensuring compliance.
  7. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills

Desirable Criteria

  1. First degree in Interior Architecture and Design
  2. Experience of providing support to teaching in Interior Architecture and Design
