TechOps Generalist, Enterprise IT Support Team
About the Role
We’re expanding our small and efficient TechOps team at Octopus Energy and are searching for a TechOps Generalist—not just to support the business, but to shape the future of TechOps at a global scale. We’re not looking for traditional IT support; instead, we need a deeply knowledgeable, experienced multidisciplinary professional who thrives in ambiguity, embraces automation, and partners across the business.
This role defies the "Jack of all trades" stereotype—you’ll be a multi-domain specialist rather than a generalist. TechOps at Octopus is an evolving, dynamic team that handles everything from 1st-line support to high-level strategic planning, blending technology expertise with organisational transformation. We automate issues out of existence instead of merely fixing them, and we scale with a cloud-first approach.
What TechOps Means at Octopus
A lean yet powerful replacement for traditional Enterprise IT, with a ratio of one TechOps team member per 1,000 employees. We manage:
- Desktop and laptop support (macOS and Windows)
- Network and office infrastructure
- SaaS and hardware procurement
- Cybersecurity and access controls
- Self-service solutions and automation
We handle big problems daily with a huge breadth of responsibilities, from collaborative troubleshooting to managing complex projects across business areas. Every day is different, and success depends on your ability to manage ambiguity and keep multiple "plates spinning."
Tools we use: Okta, Kandji, Kolide, Zscaler, Meraki, HiBob, Entra ID, Intune.
Responsibilities
- Deliver top-tier technical support to all business areas, ensuring employees can perform their roles efficiently—"their problems are our problems".
- Troubleshoot and resolve a wide variety of issues:
- Hardware faults (laptops, peripherals)
- Network problems
- Account provisioning failures
- SSO (Single Sign-On) issues
- LDAP and Identity Provider errors
- Collaborate with our Security team to balance security, productivity, and user experience effectively.
- Systematically find and implement automation to streamline redundant tasks, reducing manual effort and errors.
- Empower self-service by developing intuitive, user-friendly solutions (e.g., chatbots, knowledge bases).
- Liaise with vendors to procure SaaS solutions and hardware, ensuring the best fit for our offices worldwide.
- Manage printer fleets, digital signage, CCTV, and access control across multiple global locations.
- Lead and manage complex technical projects with multiple stakeholders, ensuring alignment with business needs. Examples include:
- Migrations of identity providers (replacing insecure methods like SMS with phishing-resistant factors).
- macOS and Windows MDM (Mobile Device Management) transitions.
- Google Workspace/Microsoft 365 SaaS migrations for acquisitions.
- Office fit-outs with converged tech (networks, AV, cybersecurity).
- Deploying device trust and enforcement solutions (e.g., Windows Hello orтокол Жесткая автентификация).

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
