Senior Test Engineer – Gateshead, UK

About the Role

We are hiring for a Senior Test Engineer to plan, coordinate, and execute project-specific test programs. The role is based at our site in Gateshead and reports into the Head of Test and Validation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Taking a lead role in planning, coordination, and execution of project-specific test programs to international and/or customer-specific standards.
  • Reporting and updating progress, risks, and issues to the project team (both during regular meetings and ad-hoc), through written and verbal communication.
  • Product assembly (software, hardware, and mechanics), troubleshooting, and testing.
  • Liaising with cross-functional departments to resolve technical problems and operational issues.
  • Designing, constructing, and maintaining test equipment.
  • Identifying and managing continuous improvement of equipment and test methods.
  • Assisting development engineers with analysis of products, including:
    • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEAs)
    • Design reviews
  • Supervising and guiding technicians and junior engineers.

Requirements

We’re looking for candidates with:

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Demonstrable experience working in a test environment.
  • Ability to develop test programs to validate system and product requirements.
  • Understanding of instrumentation and data acquisition systems, including:
    • Sensors
    • Signal measurement
    • Sampling concepts
    • Test setups
  • Ability to design and build test systems based on defined requirements.
  • Knowledge of core electrical engineering principles, including:
    • Voltage, current, resistance, power
    • Basic circuit behaviour
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate technical documentation, such as:
    • Test procedures/reports
    • Results summaries
    • Descriptive technical notes
  • Fault-finding expertise for both product and test systems.

Bonus (Not Essential)

  • Experience with LabVIEW development.
  • Environmental testing knowledge.
  • EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) testing experience.
  • NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) testing experience.
  • Exposure to testing systems up to 1kV.
  • Familiarity with automotive testing standards, such as ISO 16750.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Engineering or Science (equivalent qualifications considered).
  • Relevant field experience may be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
