Senior Theatre Practitioner (Scrub-OPD-SFA) – Permanent, Full-Time Team Leader

Location: Guildford Hospital Department: Nursing & Theatre Services Contract Type: Permanent | Full-Time Hours: 37.5 hours per week (includes weekend work and On Call rotas) Salary: Competitive, aligned with experience & qualifications

We are seeking a registered, experienced Senior Theatre Practitioner to lead theatre practices, oversee patient safety, and champion quality care in a modern hospital setting with grade national service standards. Your expertise will be instrumental in supporting the Nuffield Health Guildford team to deliver exceptional surgical care across a diverse patient population.


Your Role & Responsibilities

In this responsible and hands-on position, you will:

Patient Safety & Care Delivery Lead

  • Demonstrate a zero-tolerance approach to patient safety, taking proactive actions to address risks and encourage staff to escalate concerns if necessary.
  • Act as a patient advocate, ensuring emotional support and kind, respectful care for patients, families, and visitors during procedures.

Theatre Operations & Quality Assurance

  • Lead and coordinate theatre activities, ensuring smooth collaboration between multidisciplinary teams and adherence to national healthcare guidelines.
  • Lead by example in maintaining high standards of infection control, sterility, and environmental hygiene across theatre protocols.
  • Drive compliance with governing policies, including Nuffield Health’s Quality Governance Framework, CQC standards, Macmillan Cancer Care guidelines, and NMC/HCPC regulations.
  • Oversee elective and emergency surgical cases, liaising with consultants, APDs, and other theatrestaff to optimise workflow.

Team Development & Clinical Leadership

  • Train, mentor, and support less experienced theatre practitioners, fostering skill development and professional growth within a supportive family-centred culture.
  • Be involved in continuous staff training, with the opportunity to flex your expertise in array of surgery techniques and advanced perioperative care.
  • Co-promote service improvement initiatives with surgical teams to enhance efficiency and maintain the hospital’s reputation for outstanding care.

Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

  • Foster strong partnerships with ECPs, circulation nurses, APDs, surgeons, anaesthetists, and advisors to ensure seamless planning and delivery for complex procedures.
  • Support clinical handover, consenting, and transfer processes between wards and theatres.

Requirements

Essential

  • Registration with an appropriate governing body (e.g., NMC or HCPC).
  • Current Working Towards Enrolled Nurse (WTEN) registration or qualified an enrolled nurse status recognised by the NMC.
  • Minimum 2 years’ post-registration experience as a Senior Theatre Practitioner, preferably with ODP (Operating Department Practitioner) qualification or relevant equivalent
  • Experience as a theatre leadership or shift supervisor in a multi-surgery environment.
  • A demonstrated ability to assess requirements in complex cases and report safety concerns proactively.
  • Strong skills in sterile technology, donning, baseline equipment testing, and a methodical approach to patient needs.

Desirable

  • A track record of clinically advising or teaching on best practices for theatre techniques and equipment management.
