Radiotherapy Shadowsioser (Photon and Proton) – University College London Hospitals (UCLH)
About the Role
This exclusive and dynamic opportunity offers the chance to be part of the leading radiotherapy team at UCLH, a world-renowned health provider. The post holder will undertake rotations between:
- Photon department (delivering standard radiotherapy using photon beams)
- Proton department (delivering proton beam therapy, one of only two NHS sites offering this in the UK)
Key Areas of Work:
- Pre-treatment planning and preparation
- Treatment-prep to ensure flawless implementation
- Treatment units where actual radiotherapy is delivered
- Brachytherapy (internal radiation therapy)

About the Department
Radiotherapy services at UCLH are delivered across two cutting-edge departments:
Photon Department:
- Equipped with Varian TrueBeam systems with advanced imaging (6DoF couches)
- Comprehensive brachytherapy suite
- Gulmay skin unit (intensity-modulated external radiotherapy)
- Paediatric and Total Body Irradiation (TBI) capabilities
Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) Department:
- Equipped with Varian ProBeam gantries (highly advanced proton therapy)
- Advanced imaging packages + robotic couches for precision
- Dedicated CT and MRI scanners (only two NHS sites offering PBT)
Cancer Treatments Covered:
- A broad spectrum of cancers, including:
- Standard treatments
- Brachytherapy
- Molecular radiotherapy
- Total body irradiation (TBI)
- PBT focuses on:
- Head and neck cancers
- Brain tumours
- Sarcoma treatment sites
- Paediatrics and Teenagers/YAs (TYAs) make up ~1/3 of the patient cohort

Responsibilities
The role is autonomous, accountable, and expects professional excellence within the legal, ethical, and regulatory framework.
Core Duties:
- Operate independently and effectively within a structured 'quality framework', proposing process improvements when necessary.
- Deputise for Band 7 radiographers to ensure seamless patient flow.
- Prioritise daily tasks, considering patient needs and team resources, while adapting to challenges like equipment breakdowns.
- Provide clinical leadership by:
- Collaborating across a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) for optimal patient care before, during, and after treatment.
- Mentoring and integrating junior staff through training and skill development.
- Rotate across all areas within both Photon and Proton services, including:
- Daily on-call duty for photon radiotherapy.
- Participation in shift systems across departments.
- Continuously innovate to streamline existing methods and propose new solutions for improving patient care and service efficiency.
- Maintain competency in advanced radiotherapy software for:
- Patient treatment planning
- Image manipulation
- Virtual simulation
Requirements
The ideal candidate has: ✔ Professional competence in radiotherapy practice, with minimum Band 7 requirement or equivalent. ✔ Self-motivated, proactive attitude with a commitment to continuing professional development. ✔ Expertise in healthcare technology, particularly machine-operating software and virtual simulation tools. ✔ Strong teamwork and communication skills, able to liaise effectively with multidisciplinary colleagues. ✔ Superior problem-solving abilities for handling unforeseen challenges without disrupting patient care. ✔ Willingness to train and support junior staff, fostering departmental growth.
