With the most exciting time to join our market-leading Infrastructure Planning Team, our success hinges on attracting highly skilled consenting specialists with experience across sectors like energy, renewables, nuclear, net zero, water, rail, transportation, and aviation.
We work through all stages of the consenting process, from early feasibility and application preparation to delivering consents, with major project experience.
About the Role
WSP’s Infrastructure Planning Team is looking for an experienced Senior Consultant to:
- Support town planning and consenting inputs for major and nationally significant infrastructure projects.
- Provide technical planning and consenting expertise, covering project types like Development Consent Orders (DCOs), Designated National Significant Infrastructure Projects (DNSs), Transport & Works Acts Orders (TWAOs), and renewables/energy sector developments.
- Collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams to secure government consents and approvals, including those governed by:
- Town and Country Planning Act 1990
- Planning Act 2008
- Planning (Wales) Act 2015
- Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act
- Transport and Works Act Order
- Electricity Act
You will directly support our senior leadership, contribute to key projects under frameworks like National Grid’s Great Grid Partnership and Nuclear Waste Services, and work with high-profile clients including Bute Energy, East West Rail, Eni UK, SSE, Southern Water, Yorkshire Water, United Utilities, and others.

Responsibilities
As a Senior Consultant – Infrastructure Planning & Consenting, you will:
- Support development and coordination of client-facing town planning and consenting inputs, ensuring due diligence and opportunities are harnessed.
- Provide technical advice to clients and assist in managing their consenting requirements, aligning with their expectations and strategic priorities.
- Lead or supervise the preparation and submission of consent applications (including DCOs, DNSs, etc.) under relevant legislation, ensuring compliance and adherence to deadlines.
- Conduct stakeholder engagement and negotiations with local authorities, government agencies, and external stakeholders to mitigate risks and secure project approvals.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including planners, engineers, and legal teams, while supporting project delivery.
- Foster strong team relationships and align projects with broader goals, while proactively identifying efficiencies.
- Contribute to team and knowledge development, maintaining a robust internal resource base.
- Demonstrate basic project management skills and an awareness of financial considerations in consultancy.

Requirements
Here’s what we’re looking for in the perfect candidate:
- Demonstrable experience in securing consents for nationally significant projects under Town & Country Planning and Planning Act requirements, as applicable.
- Proven ability to consult with statutory bodies and stakeholders, ensuring regulatory success.
- Team leadership experience with supervisory or mentorship skills.
- Qualifications, Planned, or Planner Membership:
- A degree in town planning (or equivalent).
- **Member status (or eligibility) of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI)**.
- Constructive attitude toward professional development and curiosity to explore and solve new challenges.
