Overview
The AtkinsRéalis’ Traffic Control Systems (TCS) team works across the transport sector, helping clients navigate a rapidly changing world by linking current Traffic Signals and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) with future-focused technology opportunities. Their projects span a broad range of UK and international clients, including the Department for Transport, National Highways, and UK local authorities.
The team operates within the Intelligent Mobility and Smart Technology (IMST) practice, part of AtkinsRéalis' UK Transportation business and the hub for transport technology and mobility expertise. IMST comprises a diverse team, with approximately 20 TCS staff delivering market-leading capability in traffic signals, Urban Traffic Control (UTC), and operations. Combining projects such as traffic signals, motorway control systems, toll road systems, and smart ticketing with trends like digital highways, Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), Connected Vehicles, and AI, the team drives innovation across the transport sector.
Your Role
As a Senior Traffic Control Systems Engineer, you will:
- Play a key role in delivering high-quality, world-class projects to UK clients, aiming to improve people’s journeys, enhance safety, and foster a healthier and more sustainable environment.
- Shape the future of traffic control, transport technology, and mobility.
Key Responsibilities
- Location & Flexibility: Based either in Epsom or Bristol with hybrid working. Occasional short-term travel may be required to support international or UK projects.
- Project Management: Oversee successfully incept, design, implement, and operate Traffic Signal and ITS schemes from inception to operation, including:
- Detailed design
- Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT)
- Site Acceptance Tests (SAT)
- Validation
- Client Engagement: Work closely with clients to:
- Provide technical advice and tailored solutions
- Identify and exploit new opportunities
- Progress project delivery with clarity and agility
- Team Leadership: Guide and mentor less experienced staff in both technical delivery and project management competencies.
- Technical Deliverables: Ensure high-quality output through the development and review of technical reports.
- Commercial Awareness: Boost the team by leveraging:
- Budget management
- Commercial knowledge
- Preparation of cost estimates and project scopes
- Project Leadership: Direct and manage end-to-end project operations:
- Improve project risk management
- Resolve escalations
- Monitor budgets and timelines, balancing quality and output

Working either alone or embedded within cross-functional teams, you will ensure either your own work or that of the team delivers to budget, schedule, and quality standards.
About You
We seek a self-motivated, goal-driven professional with creativity, problem-solving, and passion for innovation in transport systems. Key requirements include:
- In-depth industry expertise: Profound knowledge of design processes, highways design, and traffic signal operation.
- Problem-solving savant: Exceptional ability to develop and implement innovative technical solutions and process improvements.
- Quick learner: Demonstrated capability to quickly assimilate complex technical topics, recognise opportunities, and adapt to changings industry demands.
- Client-centric communicator: Strong public speaking, client-facing consultation, and ability to foster positive working relationships.
- Multi-project leader: Handling concurrent projects while adeptly guiding junior staff members.
- Safety advocates: Continuously prioritise health and safety, conform to CDM standards, and champion environmentally responsible engineering.
Furthermore, you are either already a member or aspiring to join:
- A relevant Professional Institute
- Engaged in (or keen to pursue) professional engineering registration—advancing towards completion of professional Chartership.
Requirements
- Minimum Qualifications: Be蔬蔬odermedon qualifications in engineering (or equivalent professional experience), often capped at a Master’s Degree.
- Professional Registration: Desire to advance towards achieving registration at Professional Engineer (CEng) or Engineering Council (Authorised Representative) level.
