Legal & Compliance Team Leader: Transactional Property Counsel

The Role

This leadership position requires an experienced Qualified Solicitor specialising in commercial property law and conveyancing, with a proven track record in both transactional operations and team management.

You will lead Cornerstone’s Transactional Property Counsel team, ensuring efficient, consistent, and commercially focused delivery of high-volume property transactions that align with our strategic estates ambitions.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Team Leadership & Development

  • Embed a culture of collaboration, quality, consistency and delivery by leading and developing a team of Transactional Property Counsel.
  • Assign, manage, and optimise caseloads to meet performance targets, timelines, and programme objectives.

Strategic Legal Delivery

  • Personally oversee a portfolio of complex and high-value property transactions, including:
    • Code Agreements
    • Lease acquisitions and reorganisations
    • Freehold and licencing agreements
    • Commercial due diligence and contract drafting/negotiation.
  • Provide technical and strategic legal guidance on negotiations, escalations, and critical commercial decisions.

Operational Excellence

  • Ensure strict adherence to Heads of Terms, legal frameworks, and governance requirements while aligning transactions with business priorities and risk management.
  • Drive standardisation and efficiency improvements across transactional processes, templates, and ways of working − leveraging data to optimise performance and decision-making.
  • Monitor transaction KPIs (timelines, risks, blockers) and escalate critical issues proactively.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as the trusted legal advisor to Estates leadership and delivery teams, balancing legal risk with commercial agility.
  • Build strong partnerships across Legal & Compliance, Estates, Commercial, and external partners to deliver seamless processes.

Policy and Strategic Initiatives

  • Strengthen legal governance, risk management, and compliance, ensuring best practices are applied uniformly.
  • Contribute to broader corporate initiatives, including:
    • Knowledge sharing, supplier engagement
    • Legal training and upskilling
    • Cross-functional projects (e.g., M&A, regulatory reform)

What You’ll Bring

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified Solicitor with specialised expertise in commercial property, including landlord-tenancy frameworks, lease agreements, freehold transfers, and telecommunications-related property law.
  • Senior operational experience: Proven ability to lead or supervise high-volume transactional work in a delivery-driven environment.
  • Strategic versatility: Experience managing both complex negotiations and portfolio-level oversight while maintaining legal risk rigor.
  • Strong commercial acumen: Ability to translate legal constraints into practical, commercially viable solutions.

Critical Skills & Attributes

  • People leadership: Proven ability to coach, mentor, and develop legal and non-legal professionals at scale.
  • Stakeholder influence: Strong relationship management skills across multi-disciplinary teams (legal, ops, commercial).
  • Negotiation savvy: Expertise in cleverly resolving conflicts, managing(matters escalated from negotiators), and securing consensus.
  • Process orientation: Passion for continuously improving workflows via automation, standardisation, or systemic changes.
  • Data-driven mindset: Ability to interpret legal performance metrics and use insights to guide strategy.
