Senior Transport Modeller – Transport Planning Team

About the Role

You’ll be joining Arup’s Transport Planning team, a multidisciplinary group comprising transport planners, engineers, mathematicians, data scientists, and geographers. This role offers the opportunity to provide a core part of Arup’s consultancy services, supporting:

  • The development of new transport infrastructure
  • Enhancement of existing transport systems
  • Shaping behaviour to align with goals for travel demand management

At the heart of this work sits strategic transport modelling, which provides the evidence base for:

  • Scheme feasibility
  • Business cases
  • Appraisal
  • Environmental assessment

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior Transport Modeller to help shape and grow Arup’s strategic transport modelling capability. You will:

  • Apply deep analytical thinking to complex transport challenges, ensuring evidence-based decision-making and robust business cases.
  • Work within multidisciplinary teams as a strategic transport modelling technical lead, specifying, designing, and delivering models across diverse client projects.
  • Develop high-quality strategic models, interpret outputs, and craft clear, compelling narratives to communicate complex insights to varied audiences.
  • Contribute to client engagement, proposal development, and capability growth.
  • Mentor junior colleagues and collaborate with wider teams to integrate transport modelling into specialist areas of Arup’s work.
  • Help shape future transport solutions in a strong pipeline of projects for national, regional, and local clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply advanced technical expertise to develop and refine strategic transport models using tools like SATURN, VISUM, EMME, or CUBE.
  • Interpret model outputs to form actionable insights supporting key decision-making processes.
  • Work with stakeholders to align modelling outputs with business and policy objectives.
  • Specify project goals and methodologies while ensuring cost/effective and timely delivery.
  • Engage closely with clients, internal teams and other specialists to develop tailored solutions.
  • Mentor colleagues, encouraging skill development and good practice in modelling techniques.
  • Identify, evaluate, and where appropriate, advocate for the application of cutting-edge approaches and emerging technologies in transport.

Requirements

To thrive in this role, we’re looking for professionals with:

  • In-depth experience in developing and applying strategic transport models (tools: SATURN, VISUM, EMME or CUBE).
  • Proven expertise in Transport Appraisal Guidance (TAG), applying it effectively in appraisal and business case development.
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong track record of time and budget management, including supporting junior colleagues.
  • Experience in developing proposals and contributing to client wins.
  • A passion for evidence-based decision-making and turning data into meaningful, impactful narratives.
