Senior Transport Modeller

You will join Arup’s Transport Planning team, a multidisciplinary group of transport planners, engineers, mathematicians, data scientists and geographers. They provide a core part of Arup’s service by working with clients across public and private sectors, supporting the development of new infrastructure, enhancements to existing transport systems, and shaping travel demand management strategies that influence behaviour and outcomes. Strategic transport modelling is at the heart of this work, providing evidence for scheme feasibility, business cases, appraisal, and environmental assessments.
The Opportunity
Arup is seeking an experienced Senior Transport Modeller to lead and develop the organisation’s strategic transport modelling capabilities. This role offers the chance to apply deep analytical thinking to complex transport challenges, supporting evidence-based decision-making and developing robust business cases.
You will act as a technical lead for strategic transport modelling within multidisciplinary teams, specialising in designing, specifying, and delivering modelling work across diverse client contexts. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing high-quality strategic models tailored to client needs.
- Interpreting and communicating model outputs in engaging narratives shaped for varied audiences, from policymakers to stakeholders.
- Contributing to client engagement, proposal writing, and capability growth.
- Supporting junior colleagues and collaborating across Arup to apply transport modelling principles to specialist areas.
- Influencing the direction of modelling practice to shape future transport solutions.
There is substantial work pipeline across national, regional, and local clients, creating opportunities to innovate and shape the industry's future modelling solutions.

Key Requirements
Arup is looking for strategic transport modellers who are motivated by insight, quality, and influence. Ideal candidates will typically bring:
- A passion for developing actionable insights through robust, analytical transport models.
- In-depth experience designing and applying strategic models, including tools such as:
- SATURN
- VISUM
- EMME or CUBE
- Strong understanding of Department for Transport (DfT) Transport Appraisal Guidance (TAG) and its practical application to appraisal and business case development.
- Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical ideas clearly, formulating compelling narratives to support decision-making.
- Experience mentoring colleagues, contributing to client proposals, and delivering projects on time and budget.
