Senior Underwriter - Credit & Political Risk

Job Title: Political Risk Insurance Underwriter (Credit & Political Risks, Global Hub)

The Role

Develop a profitable book of business with a focus (but not limited to) on Political Risk Insurance, including:

  • Contract Frustration Insurance
  • Equity/Lenders Political Risk Insurance

This will be done in alignment with HDI’s underwriting principles.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Underwriting the Credit and Political Risk Insurance account—adhering to underwriting guidelines, pricing tools, and business plans.
  • Actively promoting HDI Global to I&T broking houses, with a specific emphasis on Political Risk Insurance—building a network of brokers to identify opportunities within HDI’s appetite.
  • Strategic collaboration with:
    • Underwriting Manager for Sovereign & Political Risk
    • Head of Credit & Political Risks (Global Hub)
    • Underwriting Manager (Credit & Political Risk)

Key Accountabilities

Underwriting & Business Development

  • Underwrite, review, peer-review, process, and service new business and renewals for the Credit & Political Risk account, adhering to:
    • Underwriting Authority
    • Business plans & appetite guidelines
    • All HDI underwriting rules & guidelines
  • Work with the Underwriting Manager to deepen industry knowledge, particularly in:
    • Marketing efforts
    • Portfolio development
    • Client evaluation (existing & new)
    • Product innovation

Product Expertise & Support

  • Offer product & word expertise, providing:
    • Team-wide guidance on frequent bespoke wording/clause amendments
    • A referral point for underwriters to discuss policy documentation (coordinating with Legal & Compliance)
  • Collaborate with:
    • Operations
    • Legal
    • Compliance & Home Office teams to:
      • Develop new market products (both in-house and third-party)

Client Relationship Management

  • Build and sustain strategic relationships with:
    • Key clients (primarily Banks, Public Agencies, Corporates, Traders, and select allied sectors)
    • Broker partners to enhance HDI’s market presence

External Representation & Growth Strategy

  • Speak on behalf of HDI and CPRI in:
    • Internal/external exchanges
    • Marketing workstreams & meetings
  • Enhance HDI’s profile in industry groups:
    • Berne Union
    • IUA
  • Identify:
    • New business opportunities & growth areas (supported by appropriate analytics)
    • Risk trends to propose:
      • Adjustments to underwriting appetite
      • Premium level recommendations

Process & Reporting Leadership

  • Implement and refine process controls for:
    • Quality assurance
    • Documentation accuracy
    • Outcome maintainability
  • Design, deliver, and develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs); provide:
    • Reports and insights for team/group/branch
    • Solutions to recurring reporting issues

Project & Change Management

  • Lead end-to-end project management on related functional initiatives.
  • Contribute to team/branch-wide projects as required.

Team Mentorship & Educational Leadership

  • Provide technical mentorship (Political Risk underwriting expertise) to:
    • Junior team members
    • Coverage, risk selection, market trends, and best practices

Collaborative Culture

  • Encourage cross-functional collaboration across the HDI Global Specialty Group.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Deep, hands-on expertise in:
    • Political & Credit Risk markets, with a particular focus on:
      • Contract Frustration Insurance
      • Equity/Lenders Political Risk Insurance
  • Strong analytical & technical understanding of:
    • insurance Classes
    • Five-year planning cycles
  • Established credibility among:
    • London-based brokers & clients (domestic and global)
    • Familiarity with:
      • Market development trends
      • Berne Union / IUA criteria

Desirable

  • Industry-accredited qualifications, such as:
    • ACII (Association of Corporate Treasurers: Investment Insurance Certification)
    • FCII (Fellow, Chartered Insurance Institute)
    • CFA Certification
