Senior Underwriter P&C
Senior Underwriter – Manchester
Due to an internal promotion, we are hiring for a Senior Underwriter to join our Manchester office. This critical role will involve underwriting a wide range of complex commercial insurance risks, driving profitable growth, and fostering strong broker partnerships.
This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Underwriter to apply their technical expertise, commercial judgment, and market knowledge while contributing to an underwriting team delivering consistent performance.
About the Role
You will play a key commercial role, championing profitable outcomes, driving risk mitigation, and strengthening partnerships with brokers.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Assessment & Underwriting
- Review and evaluate complex commercial insurance submissions
- Apply underwriting authority, company guidelines, and technical expertise to determine risk acceptability
- Structure bespoke solutions to balance risk versus reward
Pricing & Portfolio Management
- Develop pricing strategies through detailed financial and market analysis
- Ensure profitability and optimal portfolio performance
Broker Relationship Management
- Build and maintain strong broker relationships
- Provide quotations, negotiate effectively, and deliver Excellent service
- Support business growth through proactive engagement

Market Development & Business Growth
- Promote CNA Hardy’s products and services within the broker market
- Identify and drive profitable new business opportunities
- Position as a market leader in statutory and licenced markets
Technical Leadership & Collaboration
- Share technical and commercial insights with underwriting colleagues
- Mentor junior underwriters and colleagues where appropriate
- Collaborate with senior stakeholders on high-value or strategic risks
Requirements
Underwriting Expertise
- Strong underwriting knowledge with proven experience in assessing and managing complex commercial risks (industries including: statutory and licenced, grounding policy, environmental insurance, economic loss elements such as business interruption)
Commercial Acumen
- Ability to evaluate risk while commercially balancing growth and profitability
Relationship Building Skills
- Outstanding communication and negotiation skills
- Confidence to engage with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders
Problem-Solving & Adaptability
- Proactive mindset with a healthy dose of scepticism and insight
- Strong analytical and prioritisation skills in a fast-paced environment
