Senior UX Designer
Reports to: Senior UX & Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) Manager Location: schuh HQ, Livingston, Scotland – hybrid (2 days in office)
Purpose
Responsible for leading and evolving the UX design function to support the Digital team’s strategic objectives, driving continuous improvement across schuh’s digital experience. This role combines hands-on design leadership with people management—ensuring customer needs, business goals, and technical considerations are aligned throughout the design process.
You will own and develop the UX design system, establishing best practices, standards, and scalable solutions that deliver intuitive, accessible, and engaging customer experiences. Collaborating closely with CRO, IT, Marketing, and the wider Digital team, you’ll influence digital strategy, improve ways of working, and drive measurable improvements in customer experience and business performance.
Main Responsibilities
Strategic & Leadership
- Lead the UX design function, embedding user-centred design principles across all digital products and customer journeys.
- Define, maintain, and evolve the UX design system, ensuring consistency, scalability, accessibility, and adherence to best practice.
- Manage, coach, and develop UX designers, fostering professional growth, high performance, and consistent delivery of quality work.
- Partner with CRO, IT, Marketing, and Digital teams to identify opportunities improving customer experience while supporting commercial objectives.
Design & Delivery
- Translate customer insights, user research, analytics, and business requirements into intuitive, effective design solutions.
- Champion UX best practices and contribute to governance, processes, and Agile ways of working across the Digital team.
- Lead creation and validation of wireframes, prototypes, user flows, and interaction designs, grounded in user needs and business goals.
- Track industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitor activity to drive innovation and continuous improvement.

Technical Skills & Experience
Technical Proficiency
- Expertise in Figma: Design systems, prototyping, component management, documentation, and developer handoff.
- Deep understanding of UX design, interaction design, information architecture, and user-centred methodologies.
- Experience building, maintaining, and governing design systems across digital products.
- Proficiency in WCAG accessibility standards, responsive design, and inclusive design practices.
- Ability to interpret user research, customer feedback, behavioural analytics, A/B testing results, and CRO insights for design decisions.
- Strong baseline in ecommerce customer journeys and conversion-focused design principles.
- Skilled in cross-functional collaboration within Agile delivery teams.
Essential Experience
- 5+ years in UX design, preferably within an ecommerce or digital-first environment, with a portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design thinking and measurable business impact.
- Proven leadership in complex UX projects from discovery to delivery, balancing customer needs, business objectives, and technical constraints.
- People management experience: Coaching, mentoring, performance management, and fostering a high-performing team culture.
- Demonstrated ability to improve customer experience, engagement, or commercial KPIs through UX strategies.
- Cross-functional collaboration with CRO, IT, Marketing, and Digital teams to optimise journeys and impact metrics.
- Strong track record using user research, usability testing, analytics, and experimentation for iterative improvement.
- Proven ability to influence stakeholders across all levels and align cross-functional teams.
