About the Role
Opportunity: Experienced Senior Waste Water Process Engineer in Water Engineering teams across locations including Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, or Glasgow.
In a multidisciplinary project design team, your role will focus on delivering high-quality process engineering content, spanning feasibility and optioneering through detailed designs for procurement and construction. Key responsibilities include projects related to wastewater and water reuse solutions across the UK and overseas.
You will serve as an experienced expert, collaborating with project teams to deliver professional services for high-profile clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce process design deliverables, including:
- Optioneering studies
- Process calculations and mass balance reports
- Process flow diagrams (PFDS)
- Piping and instrumentation drawings (P&IDs)
- Sketches and basis of design reports
- Undertake outline or detailed process engineering design work.
- Site visits for data acquisition and discussions with operators.
- Provide technical input in procurement processes.
- Support Project Managers in discussions with clients.
- Engage with technology providers and vendors.
- Participation (as required) in HAZOP, HAZID, ENVID, and SWIFT assessments.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
- Collaborate across disciplines to deliver projects on time, on budget, and of high quality, ensuring seamless integration of process engineering designs.
- Contribute to proposals, work scopes, schedules, and budgets.
- Liaise with internal/external clients to meet their needs effectively.

Key Requirements
Qualifications
- Degree or MSc in Chemical or Environmental Engineering (or equivalent).
- Professional registration as CEng (or eligible to start Chartership within 12 months).
Skills and Experience
We seek candidates who demonstrate the following:
- Significant experience leading process engineering aspects of infrastructure projects, including delivering key roles on complex tasks or projects.
- Relevant expertise in the municipal water sector.
- Independent capability to prepare or review deliverables such as technical specifications, calculations, reports, datasheets, schedules, process control philosophies, P&IDs, mass balances, and procurement documentation.
- Extensive hands-on experience in wastewater treatment designs across:
- Primary treatments
- Secondary treatments
- Tertiary treatments (filtration, clarification, chemical dosing, phosphorus removal (P removal), Aspen-based systems (ASP), Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR), Membrane Bioreactors (MBR), and other advanced biological treatments).
- Strong understanding of circular economy principles and Zero Liquid Discharge solutions.
- In-depth knowledge of industrial and municipal emerging tertiary treatment processes.
- Consultancy experience in engineering companies or relevant roles, performing duties as a Process Engineer.
- Proven ability to develop high-quality technical reports and deliver clear presentations to diverse audiences (colleagues, senior teams, clients, and contractors).
- Exceptional communication skills, including confident written and verbal interactions.
- Experience leading multi-disciplinary meetings (in person and online) and representing technical interests externally to internal/external clients.
- Willingness to travel, visit operational sites and construction projects, adhere to safety protocols, and assess process performance effectively.
