About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for a Senior Wastewater Process Engineer to join our Water Engineering teams in Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, or Glasgow.

You will play a critical role within multidisciplinary project design teams, delivering process engineering design elements across a variety of challenging water engineering projects—ranging from wastewater and water reuse to international initiatives—from feasibility and optioneering to detailed designs for procurement and construction, as well as reviewing supplier proposals.

Working closely within project teams, you will help deliver effective, professional services for a diverse client base, ensuring excellence at every stage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce high-quality process design deliverables, including:
    • Optioneering studies
    • Process calculations and mass balances
    • Process flow diagrams (PFDs)
    • Piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
    • Sketches
    • Basis of design reports
  • Conduct outline and detailed process engineering design
  • Attend site visits for data collection and engage directly with site operators
  • Provide technical input to the procurement process
  • Collaborate with Project Managers in technical discussions with clients
  • Engage with technology vendors and suppliers
  • Contribute to HAZOP, HAZID, ENVID, and SWIFT sessions
  • Offer technical guidance, mentoring, and supervision to younger team members
  • Foster collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to meet project deadlines, budgets, and quality standards, ensuring seamless integration of process engineering into overall designs
  • Provide input on proposals, workscope, timelines, and budgets
  • Maintain client liaison (both internal and external) to address their specific needs

Requirements

Qualifications

  • A degree in Chemical or Environmental Engineering (or equivalent) or an MSc
  • CEng chartership (or eligibility to attain within 12 months)

Skills and Experience

  • Extensive experience in process engineering design for infrastructure projects—and demonstrated leadership when taking the lead role in such assignments
  • Strong background in the municipal water industry
  • Ability to prepare/review process design deliverables independently, including:
    • Technical specifications
    • Calculations and reports
    • Datasheets and schedules
    • Process control philosophies
    • P&IDs, mass balances
    • Procurement documentation
  • Proven experience in developing studies, feasibility analyses, concept designs, FEED, and detailed designs for:
    • Wastewater treatment solutions (municipal or industrial):
      • Primary, secondary, and tertiary treatments (e.g., filtration, clarification, chemical dosing, phosphorus removal, activated sludge processes, MBBRs, MBRs, and other advanced biological treatments)
  • Understanding of centricity principles, including circular economy and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)
  • Preference for candidates experienced in consultancy, engineering firms, or related industries, with a strong track record as a Process Engineer
  • Exceptional skill in writing technical reports and delivery presentations that exemplify a high standard for varied audiences
  • An articulate communicator who can engage in professional verbal discussions, meetings, and presentations with:
    • Colleagues (including senior staff)
    • Clients
    • Subcontractors
  • Experience in leading multidisciplinary meetings (both in-person and online) and acting as the technical representative for external stakeholders
  • Willingness to travel frequently, visiting construction sites and operating facilities to assess existing and new process performance—while prioritising safety in all environments
