About the Role
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Wastewater Process Engineer to join our Water Engineering teams located in Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, or Glasgow.
Working within multidisciplinary project design teams, you will play a key role in delivering process engineering design content on a range of challenging water engineering projects, including:
- Wastewater treatment projects
- Water reuse projects
- Domestic, commercial, and industrial schemes across the UK and overseas
You will contribute to project design from feasibility and optioneering through to producing detailed designs for procurement and construction, including reviewing supplier proposals.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Deliverables:
- Create process flow diagrams, basis of design reports, piping and instrumentation drawings, sketches, and mass balance calculations
- Develop technical specifications, feasibility studies, procurement documents, and written technical reports
- Present verbal communication and technical guidance to junior staff
- Technical Leadership:
- Lead HAZOP, HAZID, ENVID, SWIFT processes for risk assessment and compliance
- Provide technical input during procurement and supplier consultations
- Assist in refining proposals, work schedules, budgets, and project plans
- Collaboration & Site Interaction:
- Attend site visits for data collection and meetings with site operators
- Discuss technical challenges with colleagues, clients, and contractors
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams ensuring process engineering requirements align with overall project standards
- Travel requirements to operational sites—assessing both existing and new process performance

qualifications
- A Chemical or Environmental Engineering degree or MSc (or equivalent)
- Professional registration as CEng (or on track to apply for Chartership within 12 months)

Industry Experience:
- Significant experience in process engineering design for water infrastructure projects, preferably in municipal water sectors
- Proven ability to lead process engineering on projects or complex tasks
- Accountability for technical specifications, reports, schedules, P&IDs, and procurement documentation with minimal supervision

Technical Proficiency:
- Calculations & Base Designs: Produce studies, optioneering, full-field designs for water and wastewater services (including primary, secondary, tertiary treatments)
- Emerging Treatments: Understanding of circular economy concepts, zero liquid discharge (ZLD), filtration, Bios satélites (ASP, MBBR, MBR)
- Technical Reports: Draft high-quality written reports and present in team, client, or public forums

- Strong, articulate communicator in meetings (in-person/online) with team, clients, and contractors
- Act as the technical representative within multi-disciplinary teams, driving safe and effective engagement
