About the Role
A Senior Waste Water Process Engineer position has arisen, ideal for an experienced professional to join our Water Engineering teams in Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, or Glasgow.
Working within multidisciplinary project design teams, you’ll take a key role in delivering process engineering design content across wastewater and water reuse projects—both within the UK and internationally. Expect to contribute from feasibility and optioneering all the way through to detailed designs, procurement support, and supplier proposal reviews.
As an experienced Waste Water Process Engineer, you’ll collaborate with project teams to deliver effective and professional engineering services for a range of high-profile clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce high-quality process design deliverables, including:
- Optioneering studies
- Process calculations
- Mass balance analysis
- Process flow diagrams
- Piping and instrumentation (P&ID) drawings
- Sketches, sketches
- Basis of design reports
- Review supplier proposals
- Undertake outline or detailed process design from feasibility through construction
- Conduct site visits for data acquisition and stakeholder meetings
- Provide technical input during procurement
- Collaborate with Project Managers in technical discussions with clients
- Engage with technology vendors and suppliers
- Participate in risk assessment methodologies: HAZOP, HAZID, ENVID, and SWIFT workshops
- Mentor junior staff with technical guidance, coaching, and supervision
- Work collaboratively across disciplines (mechanical, civil, electrical, and construction engineering) to meet schedules, budgets, and quality standards
- Bring integration of process engineering designs into overall project plans
- Contribute to proposals, work scopes, schedules, and budgeting

- Conduct liaison with clients (internal or external) to align needs.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Chemical or Environmental Engineering degree or MSc (or equivalent)
- Professional registration as CEng (or commitment to achieving Chartership within 12 months).
Skills & Experience
- Significant experience in delivering process engineering design for infrastructure projects, including leading roles in large-scale tasks.
- Strong background in the municipal water industry.
- Ability to work independently in creating/reviewing:
- Technical specifications, calculations, reports
- Process reports, datasheets, schedules, and pipe and instrumentation diagrams
- Mass balances, control philosophies, and procurement documentation
- Experience in studies, feasibility, concept designs, FEED, and detailed design for wastewater treatment processes such as:
- Primary, secondary, and tertiary treatments
- Filtration, clarification, chemical dosing
- Nutrient removal (phosphorus)
- Advanced treatments, such as enhanced secondary processes (ASP, MBBR, MBR)
- Technical understanding of:
- Circular economy principles
- Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) and emerging tertiary processes
- Relevant experience in consultancy/industrial engineering roles, working as a Process Engineer.
- Proven skills in crafting high-quality technical reports and delivering clear presentations to diverse stakeholders.
- Confident communication skills for professional verbal discussions and presentations with:
- Colleagues, senior leadership, clients, and contractors
- Ability to:
- Lead multidisciplinary meetings (both onsite and virtual)
- Act as a technical representative for external clients
- Preparedness for travel and site visits, ensuring safety and operational performance assessments.
