Senior Water Quality Modeller

Location: Bristol Working Arrangement: Flexible with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office + option for adjusted start/finish times.


About the Role

As part of the Water team, you’ll champion sustainable water resource management to protect the water environment, improve resilience against flood risks and climate change. Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting water companies through AMP8, addressing critical water quality challenges such as storm overflows, compliance risks and environmental targets.
  • Providing technical leadership in Urban Pollution Modelling (UPM), advising on strategic and regulatory solutions.

We’ll support you to develop expertise and become a key difference-maker in transforming sustainability efforts.


Key Responsibilities

Water Model Development & Review

  • Develop, calibrate, audit and interpret models to assess water quality performance in sewerage catchments and receiving waters.
  • Undertake Urban Pollution Modelling (UPM) studies to investigate compliance failures and associated risks.

Technical Support & Software Expertise

  • Guide decision-making on the selection and application of modelling tools, including SIMCAT, SAGIS, InfoWorks ICM, MIKE and GIS.
  • Appraise improvement options to address water quality issues (e.g., combined sewage overflows, CSOs and intermittent discharges).

Compliance & Environmental Reporting

  • Prepare Water Framework Directive (WFD) compliance assessments for regulatory submissions.
  • Where applicable, design, model and implement Natural Flood Management (NFM) measures.

Reporting & Technical Output

  • Produce technical reports and environmental impact assessments for clients and regulators.

Requirements & Qualifications

To excel in this role, you will:

  • Have significant experience in water quality and hydrology, applied across varied projects.
  • Hold a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field, such as:
    • Geography
    • Engineering (e.g., Civil/Environmental)
    • Environmental science
    • Mathematics
  • Demonstrate strong proficiency with hydrological/water quality modelling software and environmental assessment tools.
  • Prove leadership and project management skills, delivering within deadlines and quality frameworks.
  • Have knowledge of:
    • Flood Risk Assessment Techniques
    • Natural Flood Management (NFM)
    • Sustainable Drainage (SuDS)
  • Be working towards or hold chartered status (preferably, e.g., C.Eng or C.WEM).
