Job Description
Our purpose is to deliver energy to the world, today and tomorrow. For over 100 years, bp has focused on discovering, developing, and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. We are one of the few companies globally that can provide governments and customers with an integrated energy offering. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner!
Please note that roles based out of SJS or Sunbury will move to Timber Square, Southwark, from Q4 2027.
The Senior Wells Engineer is accountable for delivering high-quality engineering designs and influencing well concepts to enable competitive, safe, and value-driven outcomes across both operated early-phase development and non-operated ventures. The role plays a critical part in shaping exploration opportunities, new country access, appraisal strategies, and full-field development plans by integrating well design thinking early, while also applying bp expertise to challenge, improve, and strengthen JV operator performance and decision-making.
This position combines technical leadership, iterative development planning, and value-based decision support, alongside proactive engagement with external operators and partners to generate insight, manage risk, and protect value. Through effective cross-functional influence and external collaboration, the role supports capital discipline, strengthens partnerships, and ensures robust, well-informed investment decisions.
Key Accountabilities
- Create executable well concepts from incomplete and uncertain subsurface data.
- Plan wells from the ground up, applying rigor appropriate to Front End Loading (FEL) maturity.
- Develop and refine well concepts iteratively across FEL stages, increasing definition, confidence, and decision quality as subsurface understanding and project maturity improve.
- Frame decisions in terms of options, risk, trade-offs, and value, not single-point answers.
- Balance technical accuracy with decision velocity, prioritizing what truly matters.
- Use engineering tools (e.g., Compass, WellPlan, StressCheck, EDM suite) pragmatically to inform decisions, not over-engineer outcomes.
- Provide well inputs to early cost, risk, and value assessments.
- Operate as a senior wells interface across subsurface, facilities, commercial, HSE, and project teams.
- Communicate clearly and credibly with non-wells stakeholders and senior leaders.
- Coach and mentor engineers in concept thinking, judgment, and prioritization.
- Work effectively in ambiguous, evolving environments and pivot as information matures.
- Shape operator decisions by applying bp expertise and structured challenge to improve well performance, design quality, and execution strategies.
- Drive data-led insight and benchmarking to identify value opportunities, improve cost transparency, and proactively manage JV well risks.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
