Senior WooCommerce Developer / E-commerce UX & UI Lead

Senior WooCommerce & E-Commerce Developer

Photonic Universe

Company Overview

Photonic Universe is a growing UK supplier of solar, battery, electrical and off-grid power products. We sell a wide catalogue of technical products to both retail and trade customers, with an increasing focus on B2B Clientèle.

We are redeveloping our main e-commerce platform at photonicuniverse.com, currently built on Zend Framework, PHP and MySQL. While functional, it requires a modernisation in design and technical robustness to meet evolving business needs.

The Project

We seek an experienced, commercially-minded developer to lead a hands-on WordPress/WooCommerce migration. This three-month, full-time, fixed-term role (with potential transition to permanent) involves:

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Assess the existing system, including product database, customer accounts, payment, and order workflows.
  • Migrate products, images, descriptions, categories, and metadata into WordPress + WooCommerce.
  • Design and build a responsive, mobile-first website (retail and B2B-focused).
  • Develop custom B2B portal features, including:
    • Account-specific portal functionality.
    • Trade pricing tiers and order approvals.
  • Implement advanced search/filtering using product attributes.
  • Extend WooCommerce with bespoke functionality, such as dynamic pricing engines or tailored shipping rules.
  • Integrate secure payment gateways and review existing payment providers.
  • Optimise server performance, security, and backups, ensuring GDPR compliance.
  • Collaborate with marketing, sales, and product teams to translate commercial needs into technical solutions.
  • Document the build for future maintenance and scaling.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About You

This role demands a highly skilled e-commerce developer with leadership capabilities and deep technical expertise. You must have:

Essential Requirements

✅ Strong PHP & MySQL experience (escrow handling, transaction queries, and optimisations). ✅ Hands-on WordPress/WooCommerce skills—customising themes, extensions, hooks, and APIs. ✅ Proven migration experience moving e-commerce data from legacy systems (Zend, Java, etc.). ✅ Robust development portfolio: Three+ live e-commerce projects demonstrating practice in WooCommerce or similar frameworks. ✅ Responsive, mobile-first design with cross-device validation. ✅ UX/e-commerce UX—optimising conversion rates, search functionality, and cart workflows. ✅ Payment integration (PCI compliance-fatigue-avoidance recommended). Preference for Elavon gateway experience. ✅ B2B familiarity—trade accounts, tiered pricing, bulk orders, approval workflows a plus. ✅ Collaboration with non-technical teams: Translating business logic into technical builds without losing commercial intent. ✅ Git, CI/CD pipelines, testing strategies—monitoring staging/deployments.

Nice-to-Haves

🔹 Experience with ERP or WMS integration (e.g., SAP, Fishbowl). 🔹 Technical SEO (Code Web Vitals, crawlability, schema markup). 🔹 AI/automation integration (e.g., AI-driven chat support, recommendation engines). 🔹 Interest in UK renewable solutions—solar, electrical tech—though not mandatory.
