Overview

The AtkinsRéalis' Traffic Control Systems (TCS) team works across the transport sector, helping clients navigate a rapidly changing world by linking current Traffic Signals and Intelligent Transport Systems with future-focused technology opportunities. The team undertakes a variety of design, implementation, consultancy, and advisory projects for a broad set of UK and international clients in the transport sector, including the Department for Transport, National Highways, and UK local authorities.

The team sits within the Intelligent Transport & Infrastructure (ITI) practice, part of AtkinsRéalis' UK Transportation business. The ITI practice is the home of our transport technology, asset management, and digital/data capabilities, delivering joined-up, data-driven solutions that improve transport network performance and outcomes for clients and communities. ITI comprises staff from a range of disciplines facing a range of clients, with approximately 15 TCS staff providing market-leading capability in traffic signals, Urban Traffic Control (UTC), and operations. TCS, along with the wider IMST practice, blend projects utilizing traffic signals, motorway control systems, toll road systems, and smart ticketing with thinking and advice on emerging trends and growing areas such as digital highways, Mobility-as-a-Service, Connected Vehicles, and AI.

Your role

As a Senior Traffic Control Systems Engineer, you will be a key part of our dynamic team, leading high-quality, world-class projects for clients across the UK. You will help improve people's journeys, promote safety, work towards a more healthy and sustainable environment, and build the future of traffic control, transport technology, and mobility.

Key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Leading and supervising the successful delivery of Traffic Signal and ITS schemes from inception to operation, including detailed design, FAT, SAT, and validation.
  • Engaging with clients to provide technical advice and solutions, develop opportunities, and progress project delivery.
  • Assisting, guiding, and developing less experienced staff on technical delivery and project management.
  • Delivering and reviewing high-quality technical reports and presentations.
  • Demonstrating commercial knowledge and understanding, including preparation of cost estimates and scopes.
  • Directing and managing projects, including monitoring budgets, actively raising project risks, and resolving issues.
  • Working both as part of a team and individually, monitoring your project work and the work of others to ensure delivery to budget, time, and quality.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
