Position Overview

Axelera AI is seeking a talented Senior/Staff Engineer – Computing Architecture to design and develop the next generation of AI computing systems. You will collaborate closely with hardware, software, and product teams to:

  • Define architectural requirements
  • Optimize system performance
  • Ensure scalability for our AI solutions

As a Computing Architecture Engineer, you’ll drive the conceptualization, specification, and implementation of advanced computing architectures, enabling us to deliver cutting-edge AI solutions that meet stringent customer demands.


Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Architecture Design: Define and develop architectures for AI accelerators (e.g., NPUs, GPUs).
  • Performance Optimization: Optimize computational workloads for low power consumption, high efficiency, and peak performance in AI applications.
  • Technology Leadership: Lead architectural innovation by leveraging emerging tech trends, industry advancements, and academic research.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with hardware, software, and product teams to translate requirements into balanced performance/cost/power solutions.
  • System Modeling & Tooling: Develop simulation tools to validate designs and predict performance across AI workloads.
  • Mentorship: Guide junior engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous innovation.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Degree: Master’s or PhD in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience: 5+ years in computing architecture/system design, preferably within AI, semiconductor, or computing.
  • Expertise: Strong background in AI accelerators (NPUs/GPUs).
  • Modeling & Simulation: Proficient in architectural modeling, simulation tools, and performance frameworks.
  • Programming: Deep knowledge of Python/C++, including language best practices.
  • AI Workloads: Comprehensive understanding of state-of-the-art AI inference algorithms, dataflow, and performance characteristics.
  • Delivery Track Record: Proven ability to concept → design → implement complex architectures.
  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills with disciplinary crossover and global teamwork.

Preferred (Not Mandatory but Valued)

  • Familiarity with full IC design flow (architecture → GDSII) for stakeholder communication.
  • Experience with parallel programming (e.g., CUDA, similar APIs).
  • Hands-on low-level programming/hardware knowledge.
  • Experience with AI compilation frameworks (MLIR, TVM).

Location Flexibility

We offer a hybrid/remote-friendly policy:

  • Work from one of our offices (e.g., Leuven (Belgium), Amsterdam/Eindhoven (Netherlands), Zurich (Switzerland), Florence/Milan (Italy), or Bristol (UK)) if already in proximity.
  • Work fully remotely from any European country (including the UK).
  • Relocate with us to Italy (Florence/Milan) or the Netherlands (Amsterdam/Eindhoven).

Note: Priority given to candidates based in Belgium or Italy.
