Position Overview

Axelera AI is seeking a talented Senior/Staff Engineer – Computing Architecture to co-design and engineer next-generation AI computing systems. You’ll collaborate with hardware, software, and product teams to define architectural requirements, optimize system performance, and ensure scalability for AI solutions.

In this role, you’ll lead the conceptualization, specification, and realisation of advanced computing architectures that empower Axelera AI’s cutting-edge solutions—meeting demanding customer demands.


Key Responsibilities

  • Architecture Design: Define and develop computing architectures for AI accelerators, ensuring high-performance, efficient systems.
  • Performance Optimization: Analyze and optimize computational workloads, minimizing power consumption, maximizing efficiency, and achieving peak performance for AI applications.
  • Technology Leadership: Drive innovative design by evaluating new technologies, emerging industry trends, and academic advancement in computing architect.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with hardware, software, and product teams to bridge system requirements with architectural decisions on performance, cost, and power balance.
  • System Modeling & Tooling Development: Develop advanced simulation and modeling tools to analyze and validate design requirements, predict system performance across AI workloads.
  • Mentorship & Growth: Provide expert technical guidance, mentor junior engineers, and foster a culture of excellence and continuous innovation.

Qualifications

Essential

✅ Degree: Master’s or PhD in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related AI/computing field. ✅ Experience: 5+ years in computing architecture or system design, ideally within AI, semiconductor, or high-performance computing. ✅ Specialized Expertise:

  • Proven skills in AI accelerator designs (NPUs, GPUs, or comparable systems).
  • Strong experience with architectural modeling, simulation tools, and performance analysis. ✅ Technical Proficiency:
  • Deep familiarity with Python/C++, with a strong understanding of compiler optimizations, language features, and industry best practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of AI inference workloads (machine learning algorithms, dataflows, and computational optimizations). ✅ Impact & Delivery:
  • Track record of owning complex computing architectures from initial concept to full deployment. ✅ Soft Skills:
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration ability in multidisciplinary and global environments.

Preferred (But Not Required)

🔹 Familiarity with end-to-end IC design workflow, from architecture to GDSII, enabling collaboration with silicon implementation teams. 🔹 Proficiency in parallel programming models (e.g., CUDA, OpenCL, or similar APIs). 🔹 Strong knowledge of low-level programming and hardware interactions (e.g., assembly, ISAs, bus-level optimizations). 🔹 Hands-on experience with AI-specific compilation frameworks (e.g., MLIR, Google TVM, or comparable high-level synthesis tools for software transparency).

We offer flexible work arrangements across Europe (including the UK). Choose from:

  • Office-based: Join our teams in Belgium (Leuven), Netherlands (Amsterdam, Eindhoven), Switzerland (Zurich), Italy (Florence, Milan), or UK (Bristol) if you're already in the area.
  • Fully Remote: Work from any country in Europe (including the UK).
  • Relocation Opportunity (First-Prize Option): Join us in Italy (Florence or Milan) or the Netherlands (Amsterdam or Eindhoven).

Note: Priority given to candidates interested in relocating to Belgium or Italy.
