Role Overview
Thorn SDS is a niche Managed Service Provider, who are committed to enabling technology organisations and professionals to thrive within the Space, Defence and Security sectors.
We're looking for a motivated Server Engineer to join our Hereford team, supporting and maintaining our server estate in a secure, mission-critical environment.
Whether you're an experienced infrastructure professional looking for your next challenge or have a solid technical foundation and are ready to develop your career, this is an opportunity to work with enterprise technologies alongside a knowledgeable and supportive team.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring our server and Pure Storage environments remain secure, resilient, and highly available, while contributing to infrastructure projects, service improvements, and lifecycle management activities.
On-Call Support
Following your induction and training, you'll participate in a paid, planned on-call rota, providing out-of-hours support for critical infrastructure. Appropriate support and handover will be provided to ensure you're fully prepared before joining the rota.
What You'll Be Doing
- Installing, configuring and maintaining physical and virtual server infrastructure.
- Supporting Windows Server environments and core infrastructure services.
- Managing enterprise storage, backup and disaster recovery solutions, including Pure Storage FlashArray platforms.
- Administering storage replication, snapshots, SAN/Fibre Channel connectivity, capacity planning and performance monitoring.
- Managing storage hardware, firmware and software lifecycle, including obsolescence planning and service reporting.
- Supporting the integration of storage with VMware virtualisation and enterprise backup solutions.
- Applying security updates, resolving infrastructure incidents and supporting technology refresh projects.
- Producing technical documentation and collaborating with Infrastructure, Networks and Cyber Security teams.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues across Infrastructure, Networks and Cyber Security.

What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone with a passion for infrastructure technology, strong problem-solving skills and a desire to continually learn and develop.
Essential Requirements
Due to the operational nature of this role:
- You must live within a 30-minute commute of the site to support operational and on-call requirements.
- You must be eligible to obtain and maintain UK Security Clearance.
- You must already have the Right to Work in the UK.
Along with experience in some of the following:
- Windows Server administration.
- VMware or Hyper-V virtualisation.
- Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and Group Policy.
- Enterprise storage and backup solutions.
- Pure Storage FlashArray administration.
- SAN/Fibre Channel technologies.
- Storage capacity, performance and lifecycle management.
- PowerShell scripting or automation.
- Enterprise infrastructure support.
- ITIL service management practices
