Senior Service Designer
£540 per day, inside IR35
Initial three-month contract
Newcastle, Manchester, Blackpool or Sheffield once per month
Active SC clearance or eligibility for SC clearance required
Previous experience working within a UK government organisation is essential
We are looking for an experienced Senior Service Designer to support a major programme within a large UK government organisation.
The successful candidate will operate at Senior or Lead level, helping to design and improve complex services that meet user needs and align with Government Digital Service standards. This role requires a strong background in public sector service design, excellent stakeholder management skills, and the ability to start at short notice.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead service design activity across complex digital and operational services.
- Understand user needs and translate research findings into effective service improvements.
- Map end-to-end user journeys, including digital and non-digital touchpoints.
- Develop service blueprints, journey maps, and other service design artefacts.
- Identify pain points, risks, and opportunities across existing services.
- Facilitate workshops with users, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary delivery teams.
- Work closely with user researchers, interaction designers, product managers, and delivery teams.
- Ensure services meet Government Digital Service standards and accessibility requirements.
- Communicate service design recommendations clearly to senior stakeholders.
- Support teams through discovery, alpha, beta, and live service phases.

Essential Experience
- Significant experience as a Senior or Lead Service Designer.
- Previous service design experience within a UK government organisation.
- Expert knowledge of Government Digital Service standards and ways of working.
- Experience designing complex, end-to-end public services.
- Strong understanding of user-centred design principles.
- Experience creating service blueprints, journey maps, and process flows.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong workshop facilitation and presentation experience.
- Ability to influence senior stakeholders and challenge existing ways of working.
- Availability to interview and start at short notice.

Clearance
Candidates must either hold active SC clearance or be eligible to obtain SC clearance.
Location and Travel
The role requires one visit per month to one of the following locations:
- Newcastle
- Manchester
- Blackpool
- Sheffield
Candidates can select their preferred location.
Contract Details
- Initial three-month contract.
- Immediate start.
- £540 per day.
- Inside IR35.
- Monthly on-site attendance.
- Potential for extension, subject to programme requirements.
