Service Designer

Service Designer (Grade C)

£35,412 to £44,075 per annum Permanent • 36.5 hours per week (Consultation grade, subject to formal evaluation under the Equal Pay Programme)

About the Role

We are seeking a Service Designer to join our Product function at Birmingham City Council, where you will help design and improve impactful services for residents, businesses, and colleagues across the city.

In this role, you will collaborate on designing services, processes, and experiences that integrate people, systems, and technology. Working within cross-functional teams, you will focus on creating user-centred, accessible, and inclusive public services.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with service design experience who wants to enhance their skills, tackle meaningful public sector challenges, and be part of a supportive design community.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Contribute to end‑to‑end service design and improvement, under the guidance of senior practitioners.
  • Support discovery, research, and design activities to understand user needs and pain points.
  • Work with users and colleagues to map services, identify challenges, and co-design better experiences.
  • Collaborate with product managers, developers, researchers, and service teams in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Apply user-centred design methods to test ideas, iterate rapidly, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Champion accessibility, inclusivity, and human-centred design: ensure all work aligns with these core principles.
  • Learn from feedback, data, and evidence to refine your approach continuously.
  • Engage with the wider design community by sharing knowledge and fostering collaborative ways of working.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
