Service Locator – KierBAM (Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth)
About the Role
We’re seeking an experienced Service Locator to join our KierBAM team at the Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth. Our Joint Venture, a partnership between Kier and BAM Nuttall, delivers an exciting redevelopment project on this historic Royal Navy site. As a Service Locator, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring the safe identification and management of underground services across the construction site.
Key Responsibilities
As a Service Locator, your day-to-day duties will include:
- Using geophysical techniques (e.g., electromagnetic location equipment, ground-penetrating radar) to detect underground services and accurately mark them on-site, recording type and depth
- Authorising and maintaining Permit to Break Surface (PTBS) documentation, ensuring full compliance with project procedures
- Providing teams with comprehensive service overviews within their work boundaries and advising on safe working methods
- Conducting site briefings using an 8-point checklist and enforcing exclusion zones around affected services
- Liaising with the Building Operations Support Contractor (BOSC) regarding any discrepancies in service records and ensuring up-to-date drawings

About You
This role is ideal if you have:
- Strong experience with:
- Electromagnetic location equipment
- Ground-penetrating radar (GPR)
- VST (utility sonar), CAT scanning, and Genny tools
- A solid understanding of industry standards such as:
- PAS 128 (Specifying requirements for the detection and identification of buried service installations)
- TSA/HSU (Dangerous Substances & Explosive Atmospheres Regulations)
- HSG47 (Safe Excavation Workplace Guidance)
- GS-6 (Utility Marking Standards)
- Proficient surveying knowledge and hands-on practical experience
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with teams, subcontractors, and clients
- Either:
- An existing CSCS Card, or commitment to obtaining one by the start date
- QCF Level 3 or Level 5 certification in utility detection/mapping (preferred)

Location, Flexibility & Clearance
- Location: Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth
- Hours: 42.5 hours per week (some flexibility available upon request)
- Security Clearance: BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) required. Up to 8 weeks processing time. Eligibility criteria include:
- Must hold a passport from a NATO or MISWG member country
- Must have resided in the UK for the past five consecutive years
