About the role
An excellent opportunity has become available for a skilled and motivated Service & Small Works Engineer to join a growing fire protection business operating across Ashford and surrounding areas. This Service & Small Works Engineer position is ideal for an experienced fire alarm engineer looking for a long term role offering stability, career progression, paid travel, and strong earning potential.
The successful Service & Small Works Engineer will be responsible for the servicing, maintenance, fault finding, repair, and small works installation of fire protection systems across a variety of commercial and industrial sites. This Service & Small Works Engineer role requires strong technical knowledge of fire alarm systems and associated life safety equipment, alongside the ability to work independently and maintain excellent customer relationships.
As a Service & Small Works Engineer, you will be involved throughout the full lifecycle of each service visit and small works project, from initial attendance and fault diagnosis through to commissioning, documentation, and client handover. The Service & Small Works Engineer will work closely with internal technical, sales, and project teams to ensure all works are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with current industry regulations and standards.
This role would suit a proactive Service & Small Works Engineer with experience working on fire alarm systems, strong organizational skills, and a professional approach to customer service.

Key responsibilities
- Carry out planned service visits in line with the service schedule and report issues promptly to management
- Service, maintain, test, diagnose faults, and repair fire protection systems in accordance with BS5839, BS5306, and other relevant standards
- Complete commissioning activities and support effective client handover processes
- Undertake small works installations safely and professionally across client sites
- Maintain accurate service records, worksheets, witness documentation, and photographic evidence
- Support design queries, calculations, and technical documentation where required
- Assist with build budgets, procurement planning, and resource allocation for small works projects
- Supervise subcontract labour during service and small works activities when necessary
- Ensure all works are completed in line with health and safety legislation and company procedures
- Monitor and manage cost control for works under your responsibility
- Support invoicing and applications for payment relating to completed service works
- Work closely with sales, technical, and design teams to support project continuity
- Maintain strong working relationships with clients, contractors, and site teams
- Represent the business professionally at all times
- Support continuous improvement through awareness of market developments and industry best practice
Skills and experience required
Essential
- Proven experience as a Service & Small Works Engineer or Fire Alarm Engineer
- Strong understanding of fire protection systems, servicing, maintenance, and fault finding
- Knowledge of current fire safety legislation and industry standards
- FIA, IFEDA, or equivalent fire safety certification
- Experience preparing risk assessments and method statements
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and service documentation
- Good organizational and problem-solving skills
- Competent using Microsoft Word and Excel for reporting and administration
- Full UK driving licence

- Experience supervising subcontractors or junior engineers
- Experience supporting estimates or small works quotations
