Responsibilities
Technicians perform essential routine maintenance and repairs with minimal supervision:
- Perform prescribed maintenance procedures on supermarket refrigeration systems, self-contained merchandisers, and commercial refrigeration units.
- Repair and maintain refrigeration, heating & air-conditioning systems in supermarkets, convenience stores, and cold storage facilities.
- Conduct preventative maintenance, including:
- Compressor change assists
- Leak detection and repair
- Coil washing
- Soldering copper-to-brass and copper-to-steel piping
- Diagnosing low airflow
- Installing PVC drain pipes
- Replacing evaporator/condenser motors
- Using temperature meters and sensors
- Handling blower coils and assembling hangers, struts, and supports
- Power-washing air-cooled units
- Installing Hussmann-brand refrigeration systems (including walk-in cases)
- Complete documentation (work tickets, time sheets) electronically.
- Manage truck inventory and adhere to vehicle maintenance guidelines.
- Develop strong customer relationships and communicate technical issues professionally.
- Understand basic electrical schematics: volts, amps, ohms.
- Troubleshoot and replace TXV valves (TEV).
- Demonstrate expertise in refrigerant properties (refrigerant types, oil compatibility), subcooling, superheat, vacuums (microns).
- Perform system evacuation & recovery, temperature defrosting, and component replacements.
- Work with Gage, ECM, shaded pole, PSC, and three-phase motors.
- Safely handle R290 refrigerant and hazardous materials.

Qualifications
Education
- Required: High School Diploma/GED.
- Preferred: HVAC-R or refrigeration technical school degree.
Experience
- External Candidates: 5 years in the field or 3 years with certifications.
- Internal Candidates: 1 year as a Qualified Technician with on-the-job training (OJT) and skills assessment.
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (Fleet Policy compliance).
- Ability to walk long distances, crouch, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly.
- Strong verbal and written communication and critical thinking skills.
- Mechanical aptitude (familiarity with maintenance procedures and basic tools a plus).
- Willingness to work nights/weekends as needed.
- Preferred: Knowledge of refrigeration systems or commercial HVAC.
- Strong leadership and sales aptitude.
- EPA 608 Universal Certification.
- Superior practical decision-making and record-keeping skills.
