Technician – Refrigeration & HVAC (Self-Contained Racks and Walk-in Cases)<h4>ENTRY-LEVEL OPPORTUNITY</h4>

(Primarily Supermarket, Convenience Store, and Cold Storage Facilities)

Responsibilities

The role entails a mix of diagnostic, repair, and maintenance tasks with some supervision from a Master or Lead Technician:

Daily Duties

  • Perform routine maintenance on supermarket refrigeration systems and self-contained temperature-controlled merchandisers.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in:
    • Self-contained refrigeration, heating, and air-conditioning systems.
    • Preventive maintenance (e.g., compressor change assists, leak searching, coil washing).
    • Leak detection in racks/pipework and repairs using:
      • Soldering copper-to-brass or copper-to-steel
      • Installing PVC drain pipes
      • Replacing evaporator/condenser motors
    • Temperature measurements (meters, sensors) and gas recovery.
  • Handle component replacements, including:
    • Blower coils (uncrating, hanging, fabricating hangers).
    • Air-cooled condensing units (power washing).
    • Repairs on Hussmann brand products.
    • Parallel rack installations (component replacements, walk-in case installation).
    • Troubleshooting and replacement of Thermostatic Expansion Valves (TEVs).
    • Dealing with small-motors (gauge, scale, recovery, ECM, shaded pole, PSC, three-phase).

Technical Know-How

  • Comprehensive understanding of:
    • Refrigerant properties (subcooling, superheat, evacuations, charging, pump-down).
    • Defrost types and system layouts (conventional and parallel racks).
    • Basic electrical schematics (volts, amps, ohms).
    • Safe handling of R290 refrigerant and hazardous materials like dry nitrogen.

Workplace Excellence

  • Manage electronic documentation (work tickets, timesheets) and customer paperwork using hand-held computers.
  • Maintain truck inventory accurately and adhere to vehicle maintenance programs.
  • Cultivate excellent customer relations with professional communication skills.
  • Must complete paperwork and records professionally and promptly.

Qualifications

Education

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Preferred: HVAC/R Technical School Degree or equivalent.

Experience

  • External candidates: 5 years in refrigeration or 3 years with technical certification.
  • Internal candidates: 1 year as a Qualified Technician with completed OJT and Skills Assessment.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record (must meet Fleet Policy).
  • Must be able to physically perform tasks including:
    • Walking distances, standing, crouching, climbing ladders.
    • Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs.
    • Frequent manual labor over extended periods.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written), detail orientation, and high motivation.
  • Mechanical aptitude required (knowledge of hand tools and basic repair).
  • Must be able to work** nights/w weekends as needed**.
  • Working knowledge of basic refrigeration (commercial refrigeration/HVAC preferred).

Certifications Mandatory

  • Certified under EPA Section 608 compliance (Universal).
